Writer's Volleyball 2009 - Guidelines & Commentary

Ok, it's 2009, and time to kick off another round of {Amateur Fiction} Writer's Volleyball. This is the guidelines and commentary thread for spectators and participants.

Please note that there have been numerous minor clarifications and revisions in this year's rules.

Here is how it works:

1. WHO CAN PLAY: The game is open to all comers. Typically, only forum regulars and amateur writers tend to play, but professionals who wish to join the fun are always welcome. All participants should be aware that this is a free public forum, and entries made here are not subject to any form of copyright protection, either overt or implied.

2. COMMENTS: Any and all comments (by participants and spectators alike) regarding arena posts should be made here, in the commentaryr thread, rather than in the arena thread. Compliments, catcalls, cheerleading, critiques, elaborations and cogent commentary by any and all are welcome, and help to fuel the fun. You don't have to play in order to be a vocal spectator.

3. CONTINUITY: A given post (a metaphorical 'serve' in a game of literary volleyball if you will) must end in mid-story, and the next person to post picks up approximately where the previous post left off, using their new genre style (see Rule 4 below) - after that, plot wise, all bets are off. You can steer the story wherever you wish, being as conservative, or as crazy as you desire. The actual changeover between posts may either an approximate continuation of events in the new genre, or a direct mid-sentence transition, briefly continuing the previous poster's genre prior to switching to your new genre selection.

4. GENRE HOPPING: Just to make things interesting, each new post must switch to a different fiction genre style (i.e., Sci-Fi, Horror, Gumshoe Mystery, Romance, Fantasy, Juvenile, Comedy, Anime/Cartoon, Superheroes, etc.). Imitations and parodies of well-known authors are also encouraged, as are changes in writer perspective (3rd person, 1st person, etc.), or experimental storytelling formats. You must announce that genre at the top of your post, before actually beginning. Also, to avoid confusion or misinterpretion, we ask that if you have fictionalized versions of real life people make appearances in your tales, please alter the name spelling slightly to make it extra obvious to any onlookers that your usage is fictional.

5. TURNS: Participants are not normally allowed to respond to their own posts - after you post, you must wait for at least 1 other person to post before posting again. We have some subrules that modify this, during busy stretches, and prolonged lulls ...
  • (a) BUSY INTERVALS: During stretches when the thread is popular and activity levels are high, we prevent crossed posts by using a 'token key' system - if the thread appears open, and waiting for a response, simply post "OK, MY TURN" in the game thread as a placeholder ... after that, you have up to TWO HOURS to make your post. The token will automatically expire after the two hours are up, and the the thread will once again be thrown open to all comers who wish to declare it's THEIR turn.

    (b) SLOW INTERVALS: If a minimum of 2 days pass with no other posts made to the game thread, people are allowed (and encouraged) to respond to their own post (while observing the requisite change in genre) in order to help keep things moving along.

6. EFFORT: Don’t trivialize - put a little effort into making your post interesting, entertaining, and skillful, otherwise there's no point in playing. Be as funny, or as serious as you like. The whole point is to have a little mutual fun bouncing around a constantly evolving plot - like a crowd with a beach ball. If you need it, please make use of a grammar and spellchecker before clicking 'submit'.

7. LENGTH: There is no minimum or maximum length for any given post - however, people are encouraged to limit themselves to whatever they can write in under 1 hour ... 2 hours maximum. Remember that quality is valued more than quantity and/or frequency.

8. RATING: Please remember that this is a public forum open to people of all ages - which means that young teens can view this area if they wish. Accordingly, participants are asked to limit their contributions to G & PG-13 content. Some modest lattitude in the direction of R is permissible, provided people carefully exercise restraint, and discretion, but be advised that forum moderators & admins can, and will, at their discretion, quarantine any content that's clearly a strong R or NC-17.

9. DISCLAIMER: All original content posted to this thread is considered the property of the Internet Book Database of Fiction (IBDoF), and is not copyrightable or reprintable without the written permission of the site owners. IBDoF also has the right but not the obligation to monitor, edit or remove any content for any reason. IBDoF takes no responsibility and assumes no liability for any content posted by users or any third parties. Users are not to post material previously copyrighted by others without the direct permission of the content's originator ... any such material will be promptly removed when discovered or reported, out of respect for the intellectual properties rights of it's originator.

10. ARCHIVES: For historical archival purposes, below are links to all previous volleyball threads to date, in reverse chronological order. Each year's volleyball match will be locked for posterity at the conclusion of play ... however, their associated commentary thread(s) will be left perpetually unlocked so that passers by can continue to post comments, and compliments, on past contributions, in real time, rather than being forced to hunt around for were to place them:

Ok, one question that needs resolution before we kick things off ... do we want to reintroduce the old scoring system that used to be in place, or abandon it ?

The chief flaw of the old scoring system was (1) that over the long haul people could easily dominate the standings simply by being a regular contributor, rather then purely by virtue of skill alone; and (2) we relied on Ghost to be sole adjudicator, who wasn't always around to call the score.

Personally, I'm leaning towards just leaving it unscored, and at the end of the current match (ostensibly in Jan 2010) we can nominate each other for various grandiose prizes of dubious literary merit. ;)

The following people have thus far expressed interest in participating for 2009:

Clong
The Grim Squeaker
The Egoist
Brad

If anyone else wants to participate, raise a hand (or paw), and be counted. From past experience, a game needs a minimum of at least 6 semi-regular participants in order to become self sustaining, we we need at least two more to begin.

New participants are always welcome, and historically there's no upper limit on the number of people who can play.

Anyone else interested in participating ?

C'mon you lurking shy callow wordsmith wannabees ... you have nothing to lose but your dignity and your boredom, so seize your weapons and shields of choice, don your kinesio tape and bikinis, and step into the field of honor.

{to assembled onlookers}

We who are about to die salute you !

Ok, since nobody (particularly Ghost) has chimed on resurrecting the old scoring system, let's just get underway without it.

The arena's been opened ... LET THE GAMES BEGIN.

I'll hang back for a bit, to see if anyone lurking nearby wants the honor of kicking things off.

Ditto here ... had to watch the end of the Federer vs Nadal finals at the Australian Open. However, after Federer caved unexpectedly in the 5th set, I managed to eke out a quickie before my 2 hr turn token expired. I went with the first "Rupert" reference that crossed my mind. I have no idea how he talks, so I found it mildly amusing to give him a bad aussie accent. Hope their attorneys don't find us with a name google and sue us. (j/k)

So, who's up ... Squeak ?

Ego ? (or is it Igor ? I keep forgetting)

Curt again ?

Someone else ?

Let's break this thing open, for a little open field genre running.

/me heads off to catch a few amusing and overpriced superbowl commercials ...

C'mon you lilly livered knee knockers ... Kilty, Grim Squeak, Ghost, Voralfred, Kvetch, Egoist, or any onlookers reading these words ... stop lurking in the safety of the shadows and take a stab at the ol keyboard. :deviate:

I'd rather play Jeopardy, actually. I'm VERY good at that.

Perhaps I could entice you with some particularly eggreegeous spelling errors ?

Well, you spelled Jeopardy wrong, but that didn't entice me...

Don't worry, I'll jump in when I see an opening I can add something interesting to.

You just have too much time on your hands. Go cook something.

Lurking sounds like something small animals do best (villains too); and you can add onto that scurrying, scampering etc. Can we at least say hiding in the shadows for those above 5"2.

I'll be a bit lilly livered for now, something might come up.

I did ... made a Thai style Lo Mein from leftover pasta last night: mustard oil, ginger, garlic, a little minced hot soppressata (sp?), onion, chopped cashews, sliced pork loin, fish sauce, sake, and a large fistful of chopped cilantro.

Still no posts however.

I made a short one!

Hopefully it is not too out of place!

Not out of place at all ... I like Sci Fi. :)

You narrowly beat me to the punch - I'd just started working on a standby post, in case nobody else posted, and deliberately didnt grab the token because I was hoping someone else would go. I'll post the unfinished fragment here instead of flushing it. ;)

Ok, found a way to salvage the above post fragment...

Who's next ?

BTW, just a reminder to people new to the game ... it's ok to kick off parallel story lines, and/or kill anyone and everyone, without qualm or hesitation.

Life is perception my friend. Just because the plot cobbled together thus far indicates that (a) he won gay deceiver in a card game, that (b) he loved his wife, and (c) that the blackhats are after him for some reason not yet revealed, does not in any way require him to be a 'good' guy, nor preclude him from being a baddie himself. Villains can love, and be chased by other villains. Also keep in mind that it's an alternate reality with Murdock with a "K", not Murdoch with an "h", and who knows what that might mean ... could be good, could be bad.

Someone kick the ball ! We are all Gods in this game, and the written word is our playdough of reality.

Well, due to the server migration underway, it looks like we lost the last two volleyball posts (RE: Rupert was revealed to be an unscrupulous defalcating polygamist who met a very sorry end indeed ... pardon the pun)

Someone want to take a stab at an alternate direction ?

{EDIT: Clong was able to recover the lost posts, as seen below.}
