New to this board. Look forward to share favorite reads and get suggestions - hope I can find that here. Old school science fiction guy, still love reading "Dune".

Re: WELCOME - NEW MEMBERS INTRODUCE YOURSELF HERE
Hi,
I'm a 24 year old student from Denmark. I would like to read a lot more than I do in my spare time, however the studies rob me of exactly that. During the summer holidays I love to read, and that's what I'm doing now. 6 great weeks ahead
I came here for inspiration on great books, and hope to find some!
1. Favorite Genre - None really. I like the stories that experience with language the most.
2. Favorite Author - At the moment I don't have one, but 4-5 years ago, I would probably say Stephen King.
3. Favorite Author that's not in Favorite Genre - Hard to say, but probably Max Brooks
4. How/Why you picked your Member-Name - uses it at other forums. Chosen randomly at some point. (I do like mashed potatoes though)
5. How you found IBDoF - through iblist
6. Name one book you would never recommend to a friend - Slaughterhouse 5, somehow it just rubs me the wrong way
7. Top 5 books/series - A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, IT by Stephen King, The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson, Naked Lunch (the restored text) by William S. Burroughs... It's hard to choose 5 books, and since I'm from Denmark I would probably have a couple of national contenders, that nobody else have heard about.

Welcome Wendifull, wendifull wrote:hello everybody, i am 59 years young, enjoy reading very much, live in victoria, australia ...
(I assume this is a contraction of Wendy and wonderful? I envy your hubby.)
Always glad to have a new member from Down Under (we've been getting top-heavy lately). At 67 I'm slightly younger than you are.
As for any mistakes you commit, there's no need to worry. Rest assured that, if you do knowingly violate our TOS, we'll land on you like a ton of bricks, just as they did to me.

Concerning the "science fiction rubbish", permit me to recommend ALL of Lois McMaster Bujold's books for your reading pleasure.
Enjoy your visits and let us enjoy your posts,
Francis, the window-leaner (NOT -cleaner, sorry.)
P.S. I've taken the liberty of choosing an avatar for you. You can of course delete it or choose another one. It's up to you.

Hello, Wendifull
I am just one year less young than you, and I don't just read SF, I supervise translations into french of Lois McMaster Bujold books. I share with EPS an inconditional love for her books.
Not my regular job, just a hobby (the editor does pay me for that, but the amount I get vs the time I spend means it is still a hobby...)
Welcome to this forum!

You're name isn't Wendy anymore?

I hope your new Wendy-avatar will please you.
(I like it and I'm sure Voralfred and the guys will too!)
But from now on you had better learn and sing the chorus lines of this song when the need arises. (There are some nice old cars shown in the clip).

Hey, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, you know?MidasKnight wrote:Meh, I much prefer brunettes ...

Sweetharleygirl herself said she didn't really like her new avatar, but she graciously gave me permission to leave it up until today.
As promised I have now restored Sweetharleygirl's chosen avatar.
But just to remember the ephemeral hallowatar, Peter Pan's Wendy, here she is one last time.

Re: WELCOME - NEW MEMBERS INTRODUCE YOURSELF HERE
Hi all,
I'm an American living in Germany, retired and a big fan of Lois McMaster Bujold. I believe I have read everything she has written. I'm joining to find similar titles and ask for recommendations.
I just finished rereading the Vorkosigan series and my question is where do I go from here? I would appreciate suggestions from other Bujold fans for books of the same general category and quality. Also recommendations as to were to find them. I have a Rocket e-Book (not much used) and an eBookwise 1150 but the selection of available books is poor. I might be interested in a Kindle Fire to have access to Amazon’s content but only if and when it becomes a finished product and is available in Germany. Otherwise most English books are available here in paperback.
I also read the best sellers (John Irving, John le Carre, Scott Turow, John Grisham, Jonathan Franzen, David Foster Wallace, some of Dan Brown, some of Michael Crichton, Joe Klein, etc.) and of course all of Douglas Adams.
I arrived her by way of http://www.dendarii.com
Thanks in Advance
Gary D.

Re: WELCOME - NEW MEMBERS INTRODUCE YOURSELF HERE
Welcome Gary!
We have plenty of Bujold fans here--you might try posing that same question in the Bujold forum.
One of my favorites which offers at least a vaguely Bujoldesque balance of action, humor, and empathy is Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart. Other things that come to mind include the Liaden Universe books of Sharon Lee and Steve Miller, the Mageworlds books by Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald, and the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser books of Fritz Leiber.
I hope you'll join us for some discussion in the book forums.

To answer your question:
You might like R. A. Heinlein's Citizen of the Galaxy, Podkayne of Mars and I Will Fear No Evil and maybe also Alexei Panshin's Rite of Passage.
