Ok, three more words and a hint :
"No. But similar. Those are valuable, but they're not what we seek."
(that's now all that's said by someone in one go).

And... it's not in the Vorkosiverse.

I was almost sure it was not Vorkosiverse, but I still didn't find it.. well, three more words do help.

Ok, a little more, without revelling names or such :
"Not one of those, XXX ?"
"No. But similar. Those are valuable, but they're not what we seek."
The YYY man rumbled, "How can you be so sure it even exists, ZZZ ? I think you have us on a wild goose chase. [...]"

Since this is from one of the more obscure books, I'll end everyone's suspense, and post the answer:

Book: The Spirit Ring
Who are we? Vitelli and Lord Ferrante's men
What are those? A pile of books and papers in the gallery where the conversation takes place
What do we seek? Master Beneforte's papers (on his morally ambiguous experiments)
XXX? Messer
YYY?soldierly
ZZZ? Niccolo

I had a hunch it was "Spirit Ring" but I did not guess the right chapter, and I did not have time to reread all of it...

Anyway, what about posting another one?

It's traditional to wait for Caroline to confirm my answer. I'll post a new quote tomorrow if she doesn't confirm before then.

I am absent-minded, those days.
Sure, one should wait for Caroline. Did she ever get her :sherlock: from Ghost?

A rapid check said no. So I updated her standing on his behalf.

Edit : Oh, by the way, after you posted I had enough info to find the passage, and I do confirm it is indeed correct. So if Caroline does not confirm soon, yo ucan consider that etiquette has been satisfied to post a new one soon.

That makes me think of someone with authority or perceived authority, say Gregor or Rian or Lord Auditor Vorkosigan or Cordelia or Ekaterin or Aunt Vorthys.

As for the reason of the pleasing, I have no inkling yet. It will probably come to me in a modest flash, like from a small Halloween firecracker.

My apologies for the delay, and thanks for continuing without me : I've crashed my computer's hard drive (currenty borrowing my brother's computer while he's not there...), so I can't participate for now. Could someone please update SPetty's standing on my behalf, as she of course guessed right ? Have fun.

Hmm... the surrounding text seems to be the kind that requires a lot of letter substitutions not to be a dead giveaway, so I'll go for the other kind of hint.

It's not in the Chalion books. And the character that is speaking is in more than one book, although the person who is being spoken to is not.

Nope! Interesting guess, though. Neither Ethan of Athos, nor Elli Quinn is the right answer.

I suppose it might have made just as much sense to extend the quote. Alas, I waited too long! Maybe someone else will figure it out.

By now it is pretty obvious who the character spoken to is and in what book. I have a good idea of who XXX is (there are a few more characters in that book that also appear elesewhere, but I don't see them addressing the character spoken to). But I still don't see the exact scene and the thing that would please XXX... so I leave it for someone else to answer the whole question in one time...

Timeo Belgicos et dona ferentes !

(Ceasar did not mention the Flemish separately)

EPS, your "hint" was more misleading than helpful. From Spetty"s hint it was clear that the person spoken to was a Ba. But from yours I concluded it was Ker Dubauer. But I went through _DI_ looking for all passages where this Ba appeared, and I couldn't find it. In despair, I tried Ceraganda. And of course it was there, a different Ba.
So
Book: Cetaganda
Xxx: Miles
Person spoken to: Ryan's ba
Miles is pleased about meeting Ryan, at her invitation transmitted by the ba.
