Hi there, My name is David and I come from little republic in Central Europe known as Czech.

concerning the questions:

1. My favorite genre is of course fantasy
2. Favorite author: Can't really make up my mind. Either it's the genius J. R. R. Tolkien, or not so known poland author A. Sapkowski who's written pentalogy about geralt and his companions - I believe it's not been translated into english yet, though -(
3. Favorite non-fantasy author: Not really sure, but it would most likely be D. Simmons as a sci-fi author.
4. My name is combination of word Dwell and Dweller. Not really making much of sense, but I use this nickname for forums and stuff.
5. How did I come here?: I found iblist.com first, as a result of googling for something like imdb.com, but focusing on books - and from there, I came here.
6. Worst book ever: No book like that ever got into my hands, sorry -)
7. Top 5: LOTR Trilogy by Tolkien, 'Geralt Saga' by Sapkowski, Black Magician Trilogy by Canavan, Day of the trifids by Wyndham Hyperion by Simmons.

I am glad I found this forum and iblist.com

Welcome, Dwelle.

I've read two or three of the Hyperion books and I like him too.

Hi all. Better late then never, huh?

1. Favorite Genre

Science fiction. I have dedicated my life to it. I put together a list of stories that I will read and write reviews of, and it became so long that I had to pare it down lest I die before I finish it. Yes, mortality was one of my considerations.

2. Favorite Author

Frank Herbert. Ward Moore. Clifford Simak. Cordwainer Smith. Stephen King. Kate Wilhelm. James Morrow.

3. Favorite Author that's not in Favorite Genre

James Joyce. Outside of my favorite genre I read a lot of legal books, both practice and commentary.

4. How/Why you picked your Member-Name

The Omphalos is part of the Oracle at Delphi; it was a round pit in the earth that was called "Omphalos," which in ancient Greek means "navel," or "belly-button." The implication was that the Omphalos was the center of the earth, just like the navel is the center of the body. Politically (at least until Bush II's rule) I was a centrist. Now out of a complete reluctance to embace anything that I hear coming out of any conservative's mouth I have deflected to the left, but the name has stuck. I like it better than "Lefty" or "South Paw."

5. How you found IBDoF

A few years ago I decided to start writing essays about my favorite books. This site turned up in an internet search after I tried to find some examples to teach myself how to do it effetively.

6. Name one book you would never recommend to a friend

Orphans of the Sky, by Robert Heinlein. Actually, anything written by Heinlein after his middle period.

I would sooner shoot myself in the face than recommend anything by Kevin J. Anderson.

7. Top 5 books/series

Dune (original six only). The Dark Tower, up until book four. Retief. Vorkosigan. Heechee. Some other unknown ones; namely a series by Mark Clifton about a HR manager at a government contractor.

Hiii everyone! This is a very awesome forum. I'm glad I've finally found an active place to share my love of books.

1. Favorite Genre - Fantasy

2. Favorite Author- only one? Piers Anthony, Brian Jaques, Libba Bray, J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, and many more.

3. Favorite Author that's not in Favorite Genre- There's a genre outside of Fantasy?? heh, just kidding. Mariah Stewart.

4. How/Why you picked your Member-Name- Uh...it's a roleplaying character I've had for years Ourania Dreamchaser >_>

5. How you found IBDoF- StumbleUpon. I stumbled a site listing places to get e-books and this is the first link I clicked. I'm glad I did!

6. Name one book you would never recommend to a friend- Ender's Game- Orson Scott Card. I know everyone likes it but I did not.

7. Top 5 books/series - not in any particular order...
Twilight
Harry Potter
Gemma Doyle Trilogy
Mariah Stewart's Series(es)
Redwall

I know you must think I'm a silly teenager with all these YA books but I'm 23 xD. I'm late at finding out about all of them so I'm having to read them now. I read all sorts of things though, whatever sounds good to me. I'm not too picky :3

I'm nearly twice your age and I just finished the first book of the Redwall series.

Between Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, I've rediscovered my library card. There's lots of really good stuff out there -- labeled as YA.

I sort of started down this road "investigating" books to get my oldest interested in .. but I must say that I've discovered several "new" authors that I really enjoy.

As for "Ender's Game" (which I, also, just finished). It was fine -- but "Redwall" was probably just as good -- in fact, I'm rather more likely to pick up the next Redwall book than to try the sequel to "Ender's".

Edit: I forgot to say "Welcome!!".

Having come across here from the Modesitt group I gues I'd better introduce myself.
1. Favorite Genre - Several: alternate world fantasy, MilSF, Historical military and naval fiction. I also have a large collection of military refrence books.

2. Favorite Author- again, several: Lee Modesitt, Terry Pratchett, David Eddings before his Elder Gods series, JRRT of course, Simon Scarrow, David Weber, John Ringo - the list goes on and on.

3. Favorite Author that's not in Favorite Genre- Alex Scarrow

4. How/Why you picked your Member-Name- it's my real name, I don't like sailing under false colours.

5. How you found IBDoF- via the Lee Modesitt fan site.

6. Name one book you would never recommend to a friend- Bernard Cornwell's non-Sharpe books. I guess I know too much about the Dark Ages to find his books in that setting even remotely readable.

7. Top 5 books/series - in no particular order: Elenium series, LOTR, Simon Scarrow's Roman army series, Dudley Pope's Ramage books, Modesitt's new Imager series.

Just for background, I'm ex-Regular British Army, afterwards working in several fields and retiring several years ago as a professional Fellow in my main one (think MBA but several rungs higher). I build models and write about them, with 6 or 8 books (I lost count) and well over 100 published articles. I'm a voracious reader with a large fiction collection that I re-read all the time, just as well since I read over 1,600 wpm so one book doesn't last me long.
Cheers

4. How/why you picked your member name:

On the "better late than never front."

1. Favorite Genre - Literary Fiction

2. Favorite Author- Ah hell. You can't be serious. Okay, F. Scott Fitzgerald.

3. Favorite Author that's not in Favorite Genre- Why do you people insist on me picking one. It's cruel. Difficult. Vicious. But I'll go with, E. E. Cummings.

4. How/Why you picked your Member-Name- I've been using it as nom de guerre for nearly a decade now. Back then I was working on this Dada Manifesto that was called the Egoist Manifesto. the Egoist was the character i crerated to give voice to the ideas.

5. How you found IBDoF- Brad.

6. Name one book you would never recommend to a friend- Again? One? You people are sons-of... oh bother. Here goes- Diary of a Drug Fiend by Aleister Crowley.

7. Top 5 books/series - not in any particular order...
Okay, this is evil for too many reasons to count. So I'm limiting this to books published between 1995 and 2009 that pop into my head in the next 2 minutes.
Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon translated by Lucia Graves
House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski
Gilligan's Wake by Tom Carson
Lost Girls by Alan Moore and art by Melissa Gebbie

My friend ... just because it says 'one' doesn't mean you have to conform to that. If you want to list more than one favorite in any question, HAVE A PARTY and list as many as you like. :)

Heck, I few years back, I think I listed 100+ of my favorite movies ... if someone told me I could only pick one, I'd laugh in their face too.

You can pick only one. ;)

Let it, hereby, be decreed, that the almighty RULE # 6 be amended to read:
6. Name at least one book you would never recommend to a friend.

So long as said effort does not cause undue stress or difficulty.

Welcome aboard, Janet. :)

I recently polished up our database entries for Charles de Lint. We're still missing some books for him however. If you have any faves you'd like me to fast track, simply PM me and I'll get them in within 24hrs for you, so you can rate/review them.
