Do you get the magazine VIZ in your country? (Theyve released a few books)

I'm currently reading The magna farta, an obscene dictionary with over 10,000 words and their definitions.

Here's my list so far this year, with brief comments on each:

1. Rocannon's World by Ursula Le Guin - a science fiction novel that felt much more like high fantasy. I liked it.
2. The Quiet American by Graham Greene - a good book, but I wouldn't agree with those who put it in the towering masterpiece class.
3. Fire Watch by Connie Willis - this early collection had several strong stories, mixed in with a few so-so stories.
4. Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis {re-read} - so far, the best of the Narnia book on this re-read with my 8 year old daughter, although the ending was a bit of a let-down.
5. Labyrinths by Jorge Luis Borges {re-read} - Several strong, sub-genre defining stories, in a book where the whole is even stronger than any of its individual parts.
6. Spin by Robert Charles Wilson - some very cool ideas, but
7. The Merciful Women by Federico Andahazi - great beginning, disappointing ending
8. Damnation Alley by Roger Zelazny - the worst thing I've ever read from this author.
9. The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon - a funny, dense, literate book, one that cries out for a re-read.
10. The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis - Puddleglum saves this one.
11. The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon - I thought the first two thirds or so of this book was just about perfect, but the last third left be a bit disappointed.
12. The Nine Billion Names of God by Arthur C. Clarke - a nice collection, but none of these stories will join my list of all time favorites.
13. The Horse and His Boy by C.S. Lewis - my eight year old daughter and I continue to make our way through the Narnia books as bed time reading - this was a bit of a letdown after Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair.
14. Eros Ascending by Mike Resnick - an odd little novel from Resnick, in some ways quite forgettable, but in other ways quite intruiging.
15. Out of the Dead City by Samuel L. Delany - vintage early Delany, with his unique blend of surrealism, violence, optimism and naivitee.
16. Escape to Witch Mountain by Alexander Key, more bedtime reading with my eldest daughter, proved one of those books not nearly as good as my childhood memories
16.5 I am really struggling to develop much excitement about The Many-Coloured Land. Perhaps I'll set it aside for a bit and move on to something else.
17. To Play the Fool by Laurie R. King - I decided to take a break from Julian May, and this fit the bill nicely (although it wasn't as stunningly good as I expected given how people I trust have raved about this series).
18. The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog by John Erickson was that rare book that appealed to both my eight year old daughter and my six year old son.
19. The Towers of Toron by Samuel Delany was perhaps less effective than the first book of the Fall of the Towers trilogy, but it featured a very effective surprise which has been often copied since.
20. The City of the Thousand Suns by Samuel Delany proved a strong conclusion to Delany's surreal and unconventional The Fall of the Towers trilogy.
21. The Golden Helix by Theodore Sturgeon - Another exceptionally satisfying collector for a master storyteller. Half of these 10 stories (well, 9 stories and one anecdote) were new to me. "The Golden Helix," "The Man Who Lost the Sea," "The Clinic," "The Dark Room," and "Yesterday Was Monday" were my favorites.
22. Colors of Chaos by L.E. Modesitt, Jr. - I had mixed reactions to this longest Recluce book to date.
23. Continuing through my Narnia re-read with my eight year old daughter, tonight we finished The Magician's Nephew, which offered a few clever links to the earlier books, but was definitely not amongst the best books in the series.
24. Tales of Pirx the Pilot by Stanislaw Lem - another strong collection, with "Terminus," a sort of robot ghost story, being the strongest tale.
25. Isaac Asimov's Solar System, a reasonably entertaining anthology of 10 short stories from the magazine.
26. The Further Adventures of Hank the Cowdog by John Erickson, more bedtime reading for my 6 and 8 year olds, both of whom like this series.
27. I finally finished Iron Council, and was rather disappointed.
28. Not finding anything up my traditional alley at the airport bookshop, I bought and read The Watchman by Robert Crais, which was not nearly as good as I expected given my mom's accolades for this author.
29. The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis - was by far the worst book of the Narnia series.
30. The Year's Best Science Fiction: Seventeenth Annual Collection edited by Garder Dozois had several very good stories (my favorites were from Walter Jon Williams, Kage Baker, David Marusek and Stephen Baxter).
31. It's a Dog's Life by John Erickson wasn't as good as the first two Hank the Cowdog books (in fact, my son lost interest half way through, although my oldest daughter hung in to the end).
32. Finished Murder in the Middle Pasture with my son and daughter. It was quite a bit better than book 3.
32.5 I read the first 40 pages or so of the atrociously bad Norby, the Mixed-up Robot with my daughter, and gave up.
33. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami - I can see why so many people like this book, but I was just a little disappointed.
34. Dinotopia: The World Beneath by James Gurney - My six year old son is really hooked on the Dinotopia books, which offer reasonably interesting stories coupled with great illustrations.
35. The Dog Said Bow-Wow by Michael Swanwick - A very strong collection of astonishing variety.
36. The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane had moments that felt heavy-handed and manipulate (but not enough to seriously detract).
37. Nova Swing by M. John Harrison - was a bit less unconventional than other books from this author.
38. Search the Sky by Frederik Pohl and C.M. Kornbluth - proved disappointing
39. Starshine by Theodore Sturgeon - Another solid collection from Sturgeon. Only two of these stories were new to me (seems like more must have been when I bought it).
40. Beaker's Dozen by Nancy Kress - which left me moderately disappointed.
41. Brasyl by Ian McDonald - I liked a few things about this novel, but overall I found it a mixed bag.
42. The Case Against Tomorrow by Frederik Pohl - Pohl is often hit or miss for me, and this collection was no exception.
43. Taltos by Steven Brust - a decent read offering the same black humor that marked Jhereg though in a less interesting story with little or no mystery.
44. Stalking the Unicorn by Mike Resnick - an entertaining read from Resnick.
45. When True Night Falls by C.S. Friedman - this was better than Terry Goodkind at his worst. If that's not damning with faint praise, I don't know what would be.
46. The Dispossessed by Ursula Le Guin - I did like this a lot. I need to think about it a bit before posting a review.
47. The Explorers by C.M. Kornbluth was really quite good.
48. Tripoint by C.J. Cherryh - effective storytelling, if not as strong as the first two books I read by this author.
49. The Vor Game - another winner from Bujold, who once again seemlessly combines funny, touching, and pulse pounding.
50. The Downstairs Room by Kate Wilhelm - I liked this collection of short stories, few of which were truly science fiction.
51. Star Short Novels edited by Frederik Pohl - a rather strange, but ultimately satisfying novella from Theodore Sturgeon, a decent novella from Lester del Ray, and a novella from Jessamyn West that did nothing for me.
52. The Robots of Dawn by Isaac Asimov - This one was disappointing.
53. On the Run by John D. MacDonald - was a much needed change of pace. Predictable, but with interesting characters.
54. Bachelors Get Lonely by A.A. Fair - I had very fond memories of the Cool and Lamb series from 30 years ago. This was as satisfying and fun as I had remembered.
55. The Deep Blue Good-By by John D. MacDonald {reread} - Another book that has held up better than I might have expected.
56. The Palace of Love by Jack Vance - this was the worst Demon Princes book to date... Maybe I should go back off genre for awhile.
57. The Bigger They Come by A.A. Fair - This one tells about the birth of the Donald Lam-Bertha Cool partnership. It's perhaps not the best of the series, but it's still fun.
57.5 I gave up on John D MacDonald's April Evil after about 100 pages.
58. The Big Time by Fritz Leiber - was refreshingly different from your typical sf yarn, but a bit of a disappointing ending.
59. One Fearful Yellow Eye by John D. MacDonald - was decent enough, but not up there with the best of the Travis McGee series.
60. Pass the Gravy by A.A. Fair - another reasonably entertaining Donald Lam/Bertha Cool mystery.
61. The Best from Galaxy Volume 1 - a collection of short stories from the late 60s and early 70s, all but two of which were new to me. An enjoyable collection, even if none of these will go on my all time favorites list.
62. The Road to the Rim by A Bertram Chandler - was a bit better than other titles I've read in the John Grimes series.
63. Eden by Stanislaw Lem - In many ways, Lem is really in a class by himself.
64. The Hard Way Up by A. Bertram Chandler - a collection of short stories from Grimes' days in the Federation Navy, in which he solves dilemmas with aplomb and generally does a bad job of fitting in. Nothing particularly compelling.
65. Owls Don't Blink by A.A. Fair - Donald Lam metes out justice to all, and once again gets the girl.
66. The Quick Red Fox by John D. MacDonald - offered a bit of variety from the standard Travis McGee storyline.
67. Paycheck and Other Stories by Philip K Dick - Several strong stories, with only a couple of disappointments. I tend to forget that Dick can actually be very funny.
68. Arts Inc. by Bill Ivey - I sympathized with a few of his basic arguments, but found much to disagree with in this book.
69. Bimbos of the Death Sun by Sharyn McCrumb - I've known some people who thought this was great, so I perhaps came to it with unrealistically high expectations.
70. Gold Comes in Bricks by A.A. Fair - another entertaining yarn in the Donald Lam Bertha Cool series.
71. Dead Low Tide by John D. MacDonald - had a delicious first half. along the lines of the movie "Body Heat," but a bit of a disappointing second half.
72. Crows Can't Count by A.A. Fair - one of the more disappointing Lam/Cool books this time around.
73. We Who Are About To... by Joanna Russ - a really good poke in the eye to the standard "Robinson Crusoe in space" story.
74. Borders of Infinity by Lois McMaster Bujold - I finally finished this collection of novellas, which ranged from good to superb.
75. Singularity Sky by Charlies Stross - quite good in some ways, but not as good as it could have been.
76. Pursuit on Ganymede by Michael Resnick - a bit of light diversion.
77. The Count of Nine by A.A. Fair - the ending was rather abrupt, and the story a bit far fetched, but I didn't really care. These books are great fun.
78. Tales of Neveryon by Samuel Delany - I love Delany, and I liked the first two tales very much, but this wasn't particularly compelling as a stand alone work.
79. Garden of the Moon by Steven Erikson - this made more sense the second time around...See my rather long-winded review.
80. Bedrooms Have Windows by A.A. Fair - a great beginning, and a great middle, but only a pretty good conclusion.
81. The Color of Neanderthal Eyes/And strange at Ecbatan the trees by James Tiptree Jr and Michael Bishop (respectively) - somewhat to my surprise I liked the Bishop quite a bit more than the Tiptree.
82. Finally finished Vineland, which left me with mixed feelings, but wanting to read more Pynchon.
83. Sturgeon Is Alive and Well..., a collection of late stories by one of my favorite authors. The Hugo and Nebula winner "Slow Scuplture" left me a bit disappointed, but I found plenty of stories to like.
84. Give 'Em the Ax by A.A. Fair - not the best of the Lam/Cool series, but still reasonably entertaining.
85. Full Moon by P.G. Wodehouse - exceedingly funny at times, but a bit of a disappointment at the end.
86. Ship of Shadows / No Truce with Kings by Fritz Leiber / Poul Anderson - I liked the Leiber half of this Tor Double, but didn't like the Poul Anderson story.
87. Forbidden Planets edited by Marvin Kaye - a mixed bag of a collection, the strongest of six novellas being one by Julie Czerneda.
88. Lord Peter: The Complete Peter Wimsey Stories by Dorothy L. Sayers - After reading this, I'd say that Sayers is more effective as a novelist. I did enjoy the couple that had Poe-ish elements.
89. Dress Her in Indigo by John D. MacDonald was my least favorite Travis McGee book to date.
90. A Russian Beauty and Other Stories by Vladimir Nabokov - I had read the first five or six stories some time ago, and finally came back and polished off this collection. Some nice writing, and a very interesting window on expat Russians in Berlin after WWI.
91. The Syndic by C.M. Kornbluth - was a reasonably entertaining, and surprisingly thought provoking book.
92. After Dark by Haruki Murakami - less ambitious than other novels from this author, but well done.
93. Turn on the Heat by A.A. Fair - one of the better books in a really good series.
94. The Best of John W. Campbell was a bit of a mixed bag.
95. I finally finished A Wrinkle in Time after several nights of bedtime reading with my 8 year old daughter. I thought this proved to be one of those childhood favorites that really does hold up quite well many years later.

WOW. That's quite the list!
The wonderful thing about not planning
Is that failure comes as a complete surprise
And is not preceded by a period of worry or depression

Here's my year end wrap-up:

I finished 95 books this year (including several that I read with my daughter). All in all it was a year that featured more disappointments than hits for me.

I had a lot of books that I rated as 8s, but only three books as high as 9: We Who Are About To... by Joanna Russ, Turn on the Heat by A.A. Fair, and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engel. My most consistently enjoyable reading for the year was several of the A.A. Fair (pseudonym for Erle Stanley Gardner) Donald Lam/Bertha Cool mysteries.

Some of the biggest disappointments were: Iron Council by China Mieville, The Many Coloured Land by Julian May (which I gave up on), Damnation Alley by Roger Zelazny, When True Night Falls by C.S. Friedman, and The Robots of Dawn by Isaac Asimov. It seems like I read lots of books that I expected to really like but instead found only so so(The Wind Up Bird Chronicles, and The Dispossessed for example).
