Hey everybody, since I'm posting everyday I figured I'd let you know that I'll be away for a week. I'm leaving tonight for a work related trip to London.

Well, semester is over, and I have my grades back. Not being in the doghouse is a very good feeling:

Course Section Title Final Grd Credits

CPTR-125-A Intro to Computer Science A- 4.00
FRN-102-B Elementary French II B+ 4.00
MATH-129-A Calculus/Analytic Geometry II A 4.00
ASTR-243-A Planetary Science A 4.00

A 3.75 GPA for the semester is good enough for me.

Hopefully this means that I will be around more again.

Congratulations, Scott, but I would congratulate you even more if I could understand your grades! The figures you give are totally unintelligible to me.

How come B+, A- and A are all 4.00?
4.00 out of a possible 5.00?
You needed 3.75? That seems a lot, if the max is 5.00.

In Denmark where my daughter is studying this year the maximum possible is 13, if you can imagine it! On the first term she had 3 topics, she got 10, 10 and 11 respectively, and I think she needed 8 to qualify on each topic, just 50% was not enough. Second term is not finished for her yet.

From my interpretation, the 4.00 would be the credit hours that the course is worth. So, he got As in 12 credit hours and a B in 4 credit hours. An A is worth 4 pts/hour and a B is worth 3 pts/ hour. So, he was credited with 60 total grade points out of 16 credit hours of work which translates to a 3.75 grade point average.

(4.0 is a perfect GPA if you get all As)

Hope that makes sense.

StefanY is correct about the grades

In my school, an A is 4.0 GPA
A- 3.67 GPA
B+ 3.33 GPA
B 3.0 GPA
...

The 4.00 is the number of credit-hours the class was. Some other classes are 2 credit hours (they only meet for 2 hrs/week of lectures) and some are 6.

A few people have caught me in my generally very pissy mood after french class, and they should be happy that I never have to take another class of French. (Our college has distribution requirements, I have to complete at least one 102 or higher level forigen language class, and picked french, I took a couple years of it in HS, and when I picked classes, I knew I could bug tollbaby with questions).

I think I scarred my parents for life when they saw me dancing around the house whne I found out that I got an A in Calc II and a B+ in French (all signs had pointed to a C or C- in the course).

That does make sense except that you do not make explicit the difference between A and A-, nor between B+ and an ordinary B. Or else, the B+ combined with the A- gives exactly the same as a "regular B" and a "full A", to a 3.75 average with two more "full A"s. What would be the reason of the qualifying + and - after the grade otherwise?

I clearly missed the notion of each course giving several (here: 4 each) credits.

So now that I understand better, that translates not to 15 out of 20 (as we count if France) as I first understood it (quite satisfactory, but not so remarkable) but to 18.75 out of 20 which is truly impressive!

Yes, I will add my congrats also, good job. I imagine your parents didn't care what kind of dance you were doing after they saw your report card!

EDITED TO ADD: I had a thought, Scott, that this IS the digital age. If you would like to make a tape of yourself doing the "I got better grades than I thought" dance and post it, I certainly would watch it.

I stayed in Kensington. I visited the Royal Geographical Society, The National Archives in Kew, and took trip to Taunton to visit the UK Hydrographic Office. I didn't have much free time, so I didn't see any of the places that you mentioned. I did walk by the Tower of London and crossed the bridge to get to the London Dungeon. Before going to the airport on my last day I took the tube to Piccadilly Circus, then walked to Trafalgar Square, then down to the Thames on my way to see Big Ben, Parliament, and Westminster Abbey.

I too don't really understand the US [or even Kiwi anymore] grading systems.

Well, I suppose I'm officially "back". I still don't have a home PC (working on it) but I did get to visit with Steven (Death By Ants) on Friday, and we had lots of fun kicking each other and accompanying the lads geeking out on trains (we went to the Milwaukee zoo *just* to ride the stupid train LOL Hardly saw any animals.... saw LOTS of train stuff though). I had fun, dunno if Steven felt it was worth the drive down from Oshkosh, but I think the Kopp's Burgers and Custard made it bearable

I'll be around when I can
