That's too easy! Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
But I think that one has been asked already.

Edit: I knew it seemed familiar! In fact,I had asked it in February 2008! That's not fair, it should be canceled; do ask another one, MK!

Where do we discuss the rules for these games? (Probably not on the thread itself?)

Because I think that it's too hard to research what has already been asked. I sure there will be repeats and that the answers deserve Sherlocks — but a vote of 1 (very inadequate) player doesn't count for much.

Sue

PS. It's ok with me if MK posts a new one, I just think we need to clarify the situation.

The problem with this game (for me anyway) is that I read mostly non-popular books so most wouldn't possibly get the answer to a first line from a book in my house.

My daughter happened to have F451 for school and since I had read it, I thought it was worth posting.

I agree with Sue, it is hard to not re-post unless we get obscure.

How about:
The boy looks at the iron, cherry-red in the tongs.
In the 60’s, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

Maybe your quote was a bit too obscure?
What about this one:
'That ((colored man)) going down the street,' said ((title+name of person)) standing in the ((name of place, two words)), 'he reminds me of you, Mr ((name of person)).
I have used a euphemism for the second word, but the original text was definitely not PC.
Also I erased the names of people and places

Are you asking me to change my quote or calling it cold and providing a new one?

I am confuxed.

Well, since I offered a new one, I did implicitely call yours cold, indeed; my first question was just rhetorical. But your question can still bring a sherlock, according to the usual rules.
And if it is answered before mine, and the winner wants to put a new quote, I don't ming her/him doing so, and calling my question cold.
I was just trying to restart the game....

Well, the überbarbarian Conan's father was a smith, so I'm guessing "The tower of the elephant"
It is written.

Nice guess, but not a Conan book.

Graham Greene, Our Man in Havana.
The boy looks at the iron, cherry-red in the tongs.
Tillie Olsen, I Stand Here Ironing.

Just kidding! I have no clue.

Apologies for the delay.

(I Stand Here Ironing was not a serious guess.)

No it's not Christine but a good guess.

Should we start the new year by a new first line? This one looks rather :cold:

I'll have a go, then:
In the long unfurling of his life, from thightwound kid hustler in a wool suit riding the train out of Cheyenne to geriatric limper in this spooled-out year, Mero had kicked down thoughts of the place where he began, a so-called ranch on strange ground at the south hinge of the Big Horns

This one's frozen solid. Not surprising, given the weather we had this winter. Now it's springtime, and I'll tease you with another qoute:
MR. UTTERSON the lawyer was a man of a rugged countenance, that was never lighted by a smile; cold, scanty and embarrassed in discourse; backward in sentiment; lean, long, dusty, dreary, and yet somehow lovable.
