The book starts off with peter and his friends, all of them orphans, being transported on a ship called the Never land, headed to a far off country where a most despicable king intends to take them all as slaves.
This book is definitely intended for a younger audience, mainly children around the age of 10 to 15 years old, although I did find it quite enjoyable, it was still obvious as to what audience it was aimed for. That being the case, many Dave Barry fans might be somewhat disappointed at the exclusion of some of his more involved humor. Have read one other book by Barry, Big trouble, I would have to say this one was only moderately funny. This I personally think is because of the age level this book is written for, although it is possible Ridley Pearson is one to act as a balancing point, keeping the book on a steadier track than if Barry had written it without him. Still it was enjoyable, and I found it fun to read on person’s point of view of what a prequel to such a classic tale might be.
The writing style is pretty strait forward, all in a third person narrative that switches off between various characters, mostly a chapter breaks. Simply don’t expect anything to elaborate. Your in for a somewhat traditional adventure tale, with a little bit more humor thrown in that the average kids book. I would recommend it highly to the young crowd (10-15) but would probably suggest a different book by Dave Barry to your average reader.
