Alyson Noel - Evermore - 6

Evermore /Immortals, The /1

I received this book as an early review copy from the publisher and I have to say that for a young adult book geared towards teenage girls I (a 35 year-old male) actually enjoyed it for the first part.

The story revolves around a teenage girl named Ever who has lost her entire family in a tragic accident. In the course of her recovery, she has found that she now has the ability to see peoples auras and read their thoughts. This is not something that she can turn on and off, it is ON all of the time and is to the point of almost driving her nuts. When a new boy comes to school who everyone is enamored with, Ever tries to avoid him but after coming into contact with him, realizes that she cannot read his thought or read his aura and even better, the other voices are quieted when he is around.

All around, this is a pretty decent novel. There are not any really amazing revelations or surprises that the reader doesn't see coming, but it manages to move along at a fairly brisk pace and hold the readers interest. The author manages to create some fairly unique ideas about immortality and the afterlife, and I didn't find myself to be bored. The entire novel is written in first person from Ever's point of view, so we get to learn things as she does.

My one complaint about her style however is that she needs to find some other way to express the idea that a character is holding back from saying something or frustrated with a situation. I was very annoyed whenever something came up and the main character would "press her lips." I didn't keep an actual count, but I would be surprised if she pressed those lips over fifty times in the course of the novel.

I would recommend this book for any young adult female or anyone who has read and enjoyed the Twilight Series. I think that it has a similar feel to those books and that it would give readers of the series something along the same lines to read while waiting for the next Twilight book.
