Ultra-short fiction is an evolving bridge between the mediums of poetry and prose. Sometimes called micro fiction, it generally includes anything in the below-1000-word range. The shorts in this book by John Gould only average about 4 pages each, but shine in depth for what they lack in breadth.

As a relatively new literary medium, micro fiction takes its share of criticism. Some call it a typical child of our current short-attention-span soundbite culture. Others say it disregards the effort required for plot and character development in favour of stacking up publication credits. Which do you prefer, critics argue: one mind-blowing traditional story, or ten mediocre short shorts? When well crafted, however, I think they can be one of the most powerful forms of writing out there.
