Neil Gaiman / Terry Pratchett - Good Omens - 8

Post by Darb »

Good Omens

The premise of this comedy novel (and this isn't giving away any spoilers) is that an angel and a devil form an uneasy friendship allied in a common cause ... trying to figure out just what heck went wrong with their plans to bring about (and win for their respective sides) the impending apocalypse. The infant antichrist was given to the wrong parents, and is missing !

A delightful send-up of the tired old biblical apocalypse genre (Damien Omen, Rosemary's Baby, The 7th Seal, etc), this hilarious comedy of errors was written in the same tongee-in-cheek British-humor style as Douglas Adam's "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

It's equal parts comedy, detective story, and slow-motion cosmic train wreck.

Very enjoyable light hearted fluff, filled with belly laughs.

I will refrain from actually reviewing this myself at this point, it's been a year or more since I read the book. Still I found it most enjoyable, anywhere from an 8 to a 10 depending on how modest I am feeling. It was very funny and although it had classic Terry Pratchet humor within, I felt that Neil Gaimen really enhanced the overall feel of the book. Defiantly worth reading in my opinion, I constantly find myself remembering characters and passages from this book.

I really liked this book - and I absolutely cannot stand Hitchhikers guide...

As well as obvious things like The Omen ("Damien's a nice name," she suggested), this is a wonderful parody of the Just William stories too. I had to read it in private because I laughed so much.

Terry Pratchett on taking opportunities in writing.
