Well, the name shown is the main character. I would guess that to be a huge hint. If you don't recognize the name, you haven't read the book?
Hint anyway: several of this author's books have been made into movies.

In the 60’s, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.
Well, clearly, I have not read this book (or, if ever I did, it did not leave me a lasting impression) since the name of the main character does not ring any bell for me.
Nor, apparently, to any other player.
Should we call it cold?

Well, the question was not so much whether someone would recognize it
but rather whether anyone would even look at this thread...
Anyway, you get a
and the next quote is yours.
Maybe harder than mine, but hopefully recognizable in a reasonable amount of time.
BTW, Sue and all other players:
Remember that though only answering the current quote (Macbeth) gives the right to post a new one (thus, it is Sue's turn) answering any cold quote still brings a full sherlock, so it is still worth it to answer MK's quote.

What is the time lapse before I should add a hint?
I ask this question JUST before I drive off to my annual March stitch-in. I shall be on the road all day today. I may not be able to check back to the board until about noon on Thursday; but the lodge has wi-fi, so I will keep in touch Thursday through Saturday.

Sue:
Personally I prefer hints early, after 3-4 days (and this is what I do when I ask the question). In principle I don't have to wait 5 days to answer, but I shall, anyway. So early hint would not be in my favor in this case.
Ghost is rather against too early hints.
Five days to one week seems a good compromise.

Hrm, it seems oddly familiar and yet I'm reminded of three very different authors: Modesitt, Steinbeck and one who's name I can't remember, but my 6th grade teacher would read it aloud after lunch.
