I went to Cherryh's Website, too. Same luck.

And I even looked through sites dedicated to obscure words...still no luck.

Oh, well... :slap:

I feel suddenly stupid..."Buick Pow-ahhouse"? What's that in reference to?

Here are some words that caught my eye whilst I sought out the meaning of pissaciously:

Abligurition: excessive spending on food and drink.

Altiloquent: speaking pompously or in a high flown manner.

Anililgnia: attraction to older women.

Diphallic terata: ...use your imagination.

Gambrious: being full of beer.

...and many more, which I may or may not post in the future.

a 1970 455 cubic inch buick was the lightest weight block and highest torque (510 lb-ft) engine ever to be put in an automobile by detroit until the advent of the 2003 Dodge Viper.

needless to say, lighter weight + more torque is a deadly combination.

Say, if I perform a diphthongal plie* in a pool of water, then in addition to being a wet-back, would it also mean that I'd suffer both a linguistically metaphorical and an enunciatorial wedgie ? :P

Today's WOTD is Syzygy.

Why ?

Because the best planetary alignment in roughly 30 years will be visible in the sky of the northern hemisphere shortly after sunset, for the next 2 weeks. Five (5) planets will be visible to the naked eye all at once, in the same sky.

Feel free to google around for sky watching sites for details.

Those of you who missed out on Mar's 2,000 year closest approach to Earth should make it a point to check this out.

So Brad and I were insulting each other in irc.kulish.com's #distributed, where one of the channel bots keeps an URL linked to an untoward picture of a hirsute male backside under the alias "Brad", and I came across this word to describe Brad's buttocks:

dasypygal (da-si-PYE-gul) adjective

Having hairy buttocks.

[From Greek dasy- (hairy, dense) + pyge (buttocks).]

A related word is dasymeter, an instrument for measuring the..., no, not that, rather the density of gases. Another related word is callipygian, having a beautiful behind. -Anu

Keep in mind, I'm only saying he's hairy...not beautiful. To think otherwise of this post would be apophenia. Believe me - I haven't seen it IRL, and have no desire to.

FBX:

Well, since you're a cat, and since cats tend to spend a considerable amount of time licking their own buttocks, I'm willing to bet that dasypygeal osculation can (and likely would, in your case) cause lingua villosa*.
From http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic639.htm

Background: Hairy tongue (lingua villosa) is a commonly observed condition of defective desquamation of the filiform papillae that results from a variety of precipitating factors. The condition is most frequently referred to as black hairy tongue (lingua villosa nigra); however, hairy tongue may also appear brown, white, green, pink, or any of a variety of hues depending on the specific etiology and secondary factors (eg, use of colored mouthwashes, breath mints, candies).

Pathophysiology: Precipitating factors for hairy tongue include poor oral hygiene, the use of medications (especially broad-spectrum antibiotics), and therapeutic radiation of the head and the neck. All cases of hairy tongue are characterized by a hypertrophy and elongation of filiform papillae, with a lack of normal desquamation. Normal filiform papillae are approximately 1 mm in length, whereas filiform papillae in hairy tongue have been measured at more than 15 mm in length.

I'd always thought FUBAR was "F**ked Up Beyond All Recognition".

May I interject some useful Latin?

Labra lege: read my lips

Braccae tuae aperunter: your fly is open

Elvem ipsum vivere: Elvis is still alive

Ego ti demitto: You're fired

Quanto puhas mihi hoc horogolium manuale?
How much do you think I paid for this Rolex?

Latin and Greek are the chief 'root' language behind many of our western tongues (English included) ... particularly sciences like medicine, botany, zoology, marine biology, etc.

Oh, and most of our early texts on things like religion, philosophy, law, and mathematics were first penned in those languages too.

Just ask Scottish Dress Man

yeah, true, but, i wouldnt use it. if i needed to know some Latin for something, then i would think that i would learn it while learning that something. does that make sense?

i would love to learn Aramaic though, just cos its awesome. but while taking Spanish. i quickly learned that i am not talented to learn a second language.

politically, the left is sinister, so this makes sense.

pronk - Before antelopes and gazelles run away, and also while they are running, the animals do a weird pouncing prance, in which they leap into the air, all four legs stiff and back arched.

here is both a new word and yet more evidence that you should never trust your reference material too much. www.dictionary.com (by way of princeton no less) thinks it means == jump straight up, as of kangaroos. hardly likely as the word was derived from the dutch afrikaans "pronken", and is used almost exclusively in reference to african gazelles or antellopes.

/me slowly sneaks up behind BKM, in full camo gear, and suddenly gooses him ... causing him to pronk in surprise and alarm.

So, I assume that's a verb ?

Here's a term for anyone seeking out another Sherlock: hysteron proteron. What's it mean? And from what language does it originate (though I'm certain that its obvious)?

Any takers...?
