As it has been six days since anyone has made an attempt at the quote, I conclude the quote is suffering from hypothermia.
Clue: I believe that it (the case of hypothermia) is a direct result from you guesses being so very cold.

If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you,

But more importantly

It is very vague

As requested by MidasKnight.

Well the obvious person would be Nylan talking but I have been searching for such a reference - My first guess was that it was Nylan talking to Ayrlyn in the Chaos Balance -when they either went to the grove of trees or shortly thereafter when they went to the forest- but I haven't found it in those places- perhaps I need to search earlier- back in the fall of angels.Gil galad wrote:If we take the cold place idea and roll with it a while where does it lead us? My guess is that if we can roll uphill we'll eventually get to the roof of the world right. Once we are there who might have made such a comment about balance?

No, sorry that is wrong.
You guys got way to deep with my clue. I would have got you back on track sooner about the “cold/hypothermiaâ€

How about Lerris who is talking to one of the girls before a battle.Ghost wrote:OK, here is the next quote:
"I really don't know. So long as your body stays in balance, you can give a lot of balanced order-chaos force."
The game is afoot.

You need to give speaker, listener and book.
But don't bother this time, because this is not right.

Well, my other thought was Lorn- but I was thinking he was talking to his sister- but I couldn't find it where I thought it was. But now with your new hint- I found it! It is Lorn talking to Ryalth in Magi'i of Cyador (page 269 of the paperback) when he is talking about his parents and his fears for them.Ghost wrote::

Thats right -
- Good job EAN143.
I thought this quote might be a tough one becuase you may not normally think of Lorn talking about the Order-Chaos Balance since he wasn't really a Magii or a Healer (but then I think of him as another grey wizard).
You're up.

I had actually thought of him quite early- what got me was that I was convinced he was talking with his sister and it was her that was saying this to him. Anyway... here is the next quote:Ghost wrote: I thought this quote might be a tough one becuase you may not normally think of Lorn talking about the Order-Chaos Balance since he wasn't really a Magii or a Healer (but then I think of him as another grey wizard)

Since doing anything or nothing upsets people, it is usually better to do something, if only for one's own self-respect. ...And then they all call your self-respect putting on airs.
That's it- good luck and have fun!

is this quote too hard or are people just really busy?Ean143 wrote: Since doing anything or nothing upsets people, it is usually better to do something, if only for one's own self-respect. ...And then they all call your self-respect putting on airs.

No, it is not too hard.
Some people might be too busy to look for the quote.
The part of the quote about "... putting on airs" does not sound like it would be said by any of Mr. Modesitt's main characters (and it is not).
You can't hear Lorn, Lerris, Dorin, Cerryl or even Justin saying something like that. It is a minor charater who is talking, and therfore people can't just throw out guesses as to who it it is. That si probaly why you are not getting any replies.
We don't need any clues, if no one anwsers correctly by Monday I'll give it.
I have to give others a chance to get one right.

True, but the minor character is speaking with the major players and I've always liked this quote : )Ghost wrote: The part of the quote about "... putting on airs" does not sound like it would be said by any of Mr. Modesitt's main characters (and it is not).

Yes, I agree, it is a good quote.
I was just trying to explain why you are not seeing a lot of guesses.

The quote is from "The Chaos Balance" (p 220 paperback), Gethen is talking to Nylan and Ayrlyn about thier talents.

Ok, here is the next quote (one of my favorites_:
