OK here's one:
"CAMELOT -- Camelot," said I to myself. "I don't seem to remember hearing of it before. Name of the asylum, likely."
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you,

Ok, here's mine
AT THE BEGINNING of July, during an extremely hot spell, towards evening, a young man left the closet he rented from tenants in S-y Lane, walked out to the street, and slowly, as if indecisively, headed for the K-n Bridge.

I am not changing it. That is how it is translated in the first version that amazon brings up. Other translations are different, but the proper names are not fully spelled out in any of the ones that I checked.

You got it, nzilla. You are the lucky recipient of an immensely valuable Sherlock point, and you now have the honor of posting the next "first line" quote.

----- ------ was drunk. He was eloquently drunk, lovingly and pugnaciously drunk. He leaned against the bar of the Old Home Sample Room, the most gilded and urbane saloon in Cato, Missouri, and requested the bartender to join him in "The Good Old Summer Time," the waltz of the day.
Name concealed as it's a dead giveaway.

Elmer Gantry (just got this book, oddly enough...)

hrm....
My true name is so well known in the Records, or Registers at Newgate, adn in the Old-Baily, and there are some things of such Consequence still depending there, relating to my particular Conduct, that it is not to be expected I should set my Name, or the Account of my Family to this Work; perhaps, after my Death it may be better known; at present it would not be proper, no, not tho' a general Pardon should be issued, even without Exceptions and reserve of Persons or Crimes.
I cheated somewhat and skipped the preface. This is where the actual story starts....

Moll Flanders.

Poor Moll had an AWFUL time of it....
I am a poor, wayfaring stranger
Wandering through this world of woe
But there's no sickness, no fear or danger
In that bright land
To which I go

When my win is confirmed, I'll put up a quote.

Go to the Sherlock thread and copy the latest/newest post and updated it with the award you are giving. Fairly simple, the only rule is that you cannot give yourself a Sherlock.

[Side Note: have you noticed that tollbaby laughs out loud all the time - sounds like a neat person to be around]

I forgot ( ) to say you also need to update the numerical order.

In the beginning was the myth. God, in his search for self-expression, invested the souls of Hindus, Greeks, and Germans with poetic shapes and continues to invest each child's soul with poetry every day.
Have at it!

I thought of that, but I thought they WERE still in numerical order. Went back and streamlined it a bit ;)

"The Lord of the Flies" keeps intruding in my mind, though I'm sure it's not right, what would Hindus and Greeks have to do with it. Needless to say, I do not have the book in my library.

My contribution of January 25,
There was nothing but myself.
I hung in a timeless, spaceless, forceless void that was neither light, nor dark.

was from John Wyndham's "Consider her ways and others".
