Five days sounds good to me (if not to torybear  ), crispind. That'll give other people enough time to answer the quote. After that, it's fair game--no matter if you figured out the previous quote.

So, one more day, torybear...unless someone else figures it out first. :deviate:

Here's one I just encountered in the book I happen to be rereading:

I had the feeling that...had oiled his way to his present position, oozing charm from every pore as he made his way across every type of floor. He was the kind I disliked almost on sight.

Here you need to identify, not only the source, but the source that the author is quoting in turn.

Peter.

The reference is to Henry Higgins singing in My Fair Lady about his former student trying to figure out where Eliza Dolittle is from. His conclusion. HUNGARIAN!!!

crispind wrote:"What they were doing was nothing short of despicable, but it was necessary to stop people who were despicable all of the time, rather than just in war. The problem with honor was that history had demonstrated all too clearly on all too many planets that it wasn't terribly effective against an enemy unless you had superior forces, and that was what they didn't have. All they had was a better catapult that could heft larger incendiary grenades with a much nastier and longer-and-hotter burning fluid and an even larger supply of the ceramic grenades."
I don't have my books with me right now, but wasn't that from The Chaos Balance, when Nylan and Ayrlyn were lofting pottery on the Cyadoran soldiers camped at the copper mine?

<playing the violin> Of course I was correct, Watson. It was elementary.

I forgot about the "answerer posts the next quote" rule. I'll try to post a new quote later tonight (when I get back to my closet full of books and I can find a really obscure, er ... I mean "good", one  ).

OK, here's the next quote. Whenever I read it, it makes me think of my grandfather. It's a bit short, so if no one gets it within a couple days, I'll start giving hints, but I will tell you that it is from one of LEM's books.

What is the title of the book and the name of the character who said:
"Do you know? No. You would not, but you might. I can think. But I cannot try to remember. All I am is what I remember, and I must not."

Bravo! Another Sherlock for ToryBear. It's from the end of In Endless Twilight. Your turn to quote Tory.

P.S. Gerswin's actually talking to a young lady who looks like Caroljoy (not the Custodian), but I didn't ask for who he was talking to (and she was only off by one Chapter), so I say it counts.

"I know that you have had great duties laid upon you, but thought you would like to know that Mother is close to the end. Knowing you have respected her, it might be best that you return to Fairhaven as quickly as you can, if possible. "

Your wish is granted......

"Excellence and popularity are seldom manifested in the same work, because popularity derives from the ability of humans to identify with the endeavor or the creator, and few identify comfortably with genius…."

Good luck Mr. W.

Thanks.

It's from "Musings on Excellence" (Chapter 58 of The Octagonal Raven).

I'll post the next quote within the next 3 hours.

All right. Here's the next quote. Name the title of the book, and the two speakers.
Speaker 1: "Wait a moment. Is that wise? Didn't you just make that turtle immortal?"
Speaker 2: "Nothing's wise."

Oh, this is fun! Wish I could get here regularly!
The book is The Order War and the conversation is between Justin and Gunnar toward the end of the book when Justin shows Gunnar how to balance the order and chaos in his own body : )
Right?

Close enough. Gunnar's brother is actually named Justen, but I like the name Justin enough that I'll give you the Sherlock anyway.

It's you turn to post the next quote Ean143.

Okay, here is the first part:

"You cannot learn if you refuse to read. You cannot learn if you will not think. ...You cannot succeed in anything by merely going through the motions."

Good luck!

It's Anna from the spell song sorcereous series...She is talking to the children of nobles she has gathered for her school trying to make clear to them that they have to read and think in order to be successful. I think she might also point out that she had to practice for years to become a sorcerous singer...although she was actually becoming a singer on earth.

I think that's it anyways.

well, it could be there as well- it does sound like something Anna would say too-but that isn't the book I quoted from.
