Gotcha.

(heh heh.)

Seriously, I don't pay attention to the post numbers. Kvetch had to tell me I surpassed you.

It's mostly noise, though I think my Nana's approx. 60,000 words should count as signal.

Still waitin for someone to try to pass me in the contrib standings though

I can only imagine how horribly embarassed Kiltannen will be when I eventually pass him in the contrib standings. Give it a few months.

Oh the horror. :deviate:  :smokin: :smash:

Horror is not the word.

More like "Overjoyed!"

- seriously - if anyone truly challenges my data entry score I will be ecstatic!

That's not the response I was hoping for, Kilty ... I was sorta hoping you might be willing to defend your exalted spot by importing (or entering) some more data.

I've been thinking about a S/N calculator.

The first step is to calculate a S/N for each thread. Views / Posts will get larger as S/N does (this is based on the assumption that lots of views without replies are threads that require thought before reply - i.e. signal)

assign each post a within that thread that V/P value.

to calculate the S/N of a poster, do something like taking the mean of V/P values for each post.

that's about all I've thought.

oh: Disregard posts in threads that are shorter than, say, 15 posts since the ratio could be skewed by that.

Doesnt really work - I've started substantiave threads that've gotten a fair number of views, but fairly few replies. By that measure, they're low S/N ratio. The number would be even worse if such a thread had outside linkage that drew in hits from other sites.

Before we shoot it down let's look at the numbers and see if they tell us anything. I calculated a percent using kvetch's proposal of Post vs. Views using the ten most recent threads in each area. A lower number is a lower signal to noise ratio (good) and a higher number a higher signal to noise ratio (not so good).

Critics Corner 4.8%
Modesitt 7.9%
Quill and Fountain 10.1%
Tap Room 11.0%
Reading Room 11.4%
Soapbox 16.4%
PLT&H 25.0%
Margins 48.5%

I’ll see if I can do the same for people.

The mind boggles at the thought of doing this form of statistical analyses, and totally wigs out at the thought of figuring out the code!..

maybe down the road - yeah that's it...

OK - here is a vague promise to consider some sort of signal/Noise calculater at some stage in the future, waaayy in the future...

Just to continue to boggle people minds (one of my past-times). I calculated a similar ratio for people who started threads: Posts vs. Views. This is not very scientific with just ten threads to analysis.

felonius 11.8%
Ghost 13.1%
Brad 14.8%
Cho 21.0%
Kahrey 26.2%
MidasKnight 43.6%
kvetch 46.8%
Hunter B 54.3%

It seems that my method works here. Critic's corner is the lowest, and Margins the highest. PLT&H and Soapbox are pretty high.
felonius 11.8%

This is perhaps a bit dodgier, but Brad is low and I am high. it makes sense.

kilt: surely the views and posts of each thread are already stored as values somewhere in the Db? and the only calculations Ghost has done is ( posts / views ) * 100 and taking means. getting the value it to depend on ALL posts by a user might be difficult, but basing it on the threads you have started should be easier... (OK, not EASY, but easier)
