Yet *Another* Quote Game [First line game]

Post by Kvetch »

I've come up with another quote game:

rules are like that of the MQG, but rather than quotes from Modesitt, you can quote from any book provided:

# The quote is the first passage in the book. (e.g. 'In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit...'). You may vary the lenghth of your passage as much as you like.

# The books is fairly important/famous in it's genre (to ensure the quote will be recognised - if nesc. post the genre too)

CAVEAT: it is easy to find a quote that is nigh impossible to get: please choose your quote so it is fairly likely one of us will get it.

To win requires the author/pseudonym and book(/pay/etc.) title

I'll kick off with the (easy)
The sky over the port was the colour of television, tuned to a dead channel.
NB: sherlocks or no sherlocks? - I would say so, but I'll bow to opinion
"I'm the family radical. The rest are terribly stuffy. Aside from Aunt - she's just odd."

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Left Munich at 8:35 P.M., on 1st May, arriving at Vienna early next morning; should have arrived at 6:46, but train was an hour late.
/felonius, there is something wrong with us - I was going to use that quote on the last one but changed my mind!!! This game maybe is too easy for Sherlock points.

It's not too easy, especially for some of us who maybe haven't read all that many books. I think these two are just too smart! Maybe we should make it so the dumb ones, like myself, get a full sherlock for a correct answer, and the smart ones, like Ghost and Felonius only get a half point. It's kinda like a handicap. I still think they'll kick our collective @$$es. :wall:

Plus, I believe a rule has been broken.... the winner of a quote cannot guess on the next one for for 5 days, right? Same rules as the MQG?

(Ok, now I sound like a whiny loser, picking on the winners when I know I didn't even have a clue as to the first several quotes... I swear, it's not like that!)

I think you are right - if this is for Sherlock points there should be a waiting period!

Sorry RM - I'm not a regular in any Modesitt threads and wasn't aware of of the "no winner guess" rule from MQG.

I know a lot of members here have fun with Sherlocks and I don't mean to come off as a spoilsport but I never really get very preoccupied with them - I just enjoy games and go with the flow, mostly. I'll happily go with whatever consensus...

Don’t feel bad felonius, I knew about the rules and still got caught up in the flow of the game. 8)

If we decide that this game is not for Sherlocks then they should not be any waiting period. I feel if you don’t wait the 5 days you just forgo your Sherlock.

But maybe, we should get some more input.

I think some more input.... let's give the topic a little time and see what happens.

For the record, here's my opinion:

Sherlock awarded for each correct guess
Previous winner cannot guess on the next quote for 3 days
Quote goes cold after 7 days
New quote to be posted within 24 hours

Dracula by Bram Stoker

On the night that Davis Cooper died, coyotes came down from the hills to the town in the desert valley below. They came from the Santa Rita Mountains in the south. From the Tucson Mountains in the west. From the Catalinas in the north. From the Rincons, where the sun would rise over the dead man's body.

They entered the sleeping city, shadows travelling stealthily through a network of dry riverbeds, slipping through the streets, through parking lots, through drainage tunnels and alleyways. There was one small boy who saw them pass, his nose pressed to the window glass as four, ten, twenty coyotes drifted through suburban yards, headed for some wilder place where the child longed to follow. Later his mother would tell him it was only a dream, and he would believe her.

Hint: This is a fantasy author I just discovered last summer, and in addition to being part of the game, it's a bit of a fishing expedition to see if anyone else has read her.

EDITTED: I added to it a bit, having reread the rules and seeing that it didn't have to be just the first line. I've now given the first two paragraphs, which I think are wonderful scene and mood setters. It was what made me buy the book to begin with.

:)

no idea either: remember '# The books is fairly important/famous in it's genre (to ensure the quote will be recognised - if nesc. post the genre too)' though.

Fel: I'll give you a sherlock.

RE: Sherlocks - how about defining whether a shelock will be given when you post? - you could either post 'SHERLOCK' or 'NO SHERLOCK'

Awesome. You got it!

Did you like the story? It was such a strange but compelling premise. I thought the images were amazing.

I am clueless on the Sherlock thing. Explain it to me.

One Sherlock to RM. With chocolate sprinkles. Yum.

Do I get one for Dracula? Do I get one for being cute?'

Can I have caramel sauce on mine?

Hee Hee Hee

Shouldn't RM post the next opening line?

I'm not sure I deserve a sherlock for that one, I cheated a bit...

I haven't read the book, but went off of the name included in the quote, but I did find the first couple of chapters published on the internet, and read them, and now I think I either need to get the book or find it at the library. The imagery is very powerful, and the synopsis of the book is pretty good. It's not your usual fantasy type book.

I'm at work right now, but I will post a new quote when I either get home or find a good book in one of my co-workers' office.

the idea is you gain a point for knowing/finding an obscure piece of knowledge (such as recognising a quote in the MQG)
Do I get one for Dracula?
yes
Do I get one for being cute?'
sadly, no
Shouldn't RM post the next opening line?
yes.

Ok, because you are all beating on me to get a quote out I've found one from an electronic version of the book - yes, hypocrisy is rearing its ugly head, and like the gopher game at the Chuck-e-Cheese I've got my mallet ready! - :smash:

[quote]In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.

Can I suggest that, if no sherlock is offered, and you are sure of your reply, go ahead and post your quote immediately.

Remember to state if a sherlock is to be awarded.

Never even heard of that book, so no.

And yes, a Sherlock for this quote, it's a good one.
