Perpetual "What's for Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Today" thread

Post by Darb »

Yesturday I did a catered party for my parents, at their house, for a bunch of their friends - about 25 people in all. Menu follows:

Appetizers:
* Assorted Crudite w/Dip (in this case, creamy italian dressing)
* Bruschetta w/2 toppings: Homemade Tapenade and a Homemade Pomodoro Salsa
* NY Sheeps Milk Brie ("Old Catham") with Crackers

Entree & Side:
* Italian style Seafood Salad (about 7 qts) - artichokes, peppers, cucumber, heart of palm, squid, crab, shrimp, herbs, seasonings, tuscan oil, etc ... it's a dish I'm known for
* Macaroni Salad

Everyone was happy. :thumb:

Unfortunately my parents kept all the leftovers, my sushi bar is closed on mondays, and I won't have time to cook tonite, so it's probably taco bell for me on the way home :(

Every mother's dream.....a son to do the cooking for dinner parties

Taco Bell's not so bad - I like their chicken taco salad w/ ranch dressing (and no sour cream).

Taramasalata is the prelude to the Greek symphony "Moussaka and Baklava" - a delicious little ditty played on pita. Yum yum yum

Tonight I am staying at work until all my crap is done so I can have the whole labor day weekend to myself. So, at about midnight, I'll be leaving here.....

Anyhow, I was just discussing Chinese takeout with one of the kids I work with, just to get me through the next several long, long hours.

I'm thinking Moo Goo Gai Pan....and possibly some steamed dumplings. And definitely egg drop soup.

Then I can eat the leftovers tomorrow.

Last night I had green beans with mushrooms and cucumber salad. I love cucumbers when they're fresh out of somebody's garden. Mmmm.

It is almost 8:30 pm and I haven't a clue what's for dinner. I'm feeling a little sorry for myself as I'm contemplating a bowl of cheerios. Sigh.

Maybe an orange as well.

*Sniff*

I want a veggie pizza, light on the garlic sauce and heavy on the artichoke hearts.

But it's cheerios for me.

Don't you want to call Pizza Hut or Dominos?

Uh...I wasn't teasing about my location. :slap:

I live in the boonies. Way out in the boonies. Which is why I have such a long commute.

No pizza deliveries for me! *sniff*

I have been trying to sell my house and move to Rochester, but no one wants to live in the boonies, apparently. (Not even me)

Heh heh. Me too. But hey! At least I live in a house and not a cardboard box.

I *could* have picked up a pizza on the way home, but didn't think of it. Oh well. I like cheerios. They give me go power. And geek energy. Lots of geek energy. (Just like Tom Arnold)

If it's any consolation, Cho, I opened a can of tunafish, mixed in some mayo, and ate it with potato chips for dinner. Not exactly cordon bleu, but quite filling. And blessedly ant-free, unlike most of my pantry items.........

Cho: if you go to page 1 of the culinaria thread, you'll find a pair of fairly extensive posts by moi on making homemade pizza, from scratch. Good stuff. I dont do it in the summer, because it gets my kitchen too hot, but It's staple in my house all winter long ... rarely less than twice a month. :thumb:

Mmm. Pizza. Do you make a garlic sauce? I prefer it to the tomato sauce. I will check out the other forum. Thanks Brad. :thumb:

Today, for lunch, I had blue claw crabs. Mmmmmmm.

Cleaned, carapace removed, then sauteed whole in teriyaki, whole garlic, and oil until the garlic is golden and the crabs are done (supposedly about 10-15 mins). Messy to eat (and definitely not for shy or prissy diners), but oh so yummy.

I'm gonna reverse engineer that dish, and make it at my next BBQ ... esp since local live crabs are cheap now ($7/dozen).

My version will probably use a completely different sauce though (something less overpowering and oily) ... probably one that features tequila. :thumb:

 $7/dozen! Wow! It's about $10-$13 a pound here. What kind of crabs are they?

Re-read ... blue-claw crabs. 8)

They're cheaper here because they're local, in season, and don't have to be flown anywhere. :thumb:

Sadly, many people are either squeemish or have no idea how to cook & eat them. Their loss is MY GAIN.
