Depending on where you are, just checking your shoes might not be enough.
Once in a hotel in Épernay, France (shopping for Champagne), upon entering my room, I discovered a little black scorpion sitting on the white wall. About 6 cm long it was. I caught it in my plastic soap box and quickly put the lid on and a rubber band around it.
The hotel receptionist explained where it came from. The room's previous occupants had just returned from North Africa and had probably brought the arachnid along in their luggage.
But if there's one, there could be more, right?
I did redo the bed and covered my shoes with toilet paper for the night. The flimsy paper certainly would not keep a scorpion out, but then would not hold its weight and let it drop in, thus disturbing the paper and betraying its intrusion.
My bar of soap got stuffed in a plastic bag ...
