Re: LMB Quote Game
Question: Would people prefer another hint or another quote?
Either is ok by me - I hadn't expected a Spirit Ring quote to be quite that difficult.

As far as I am concerned, I don't think another hint would help. I did not read and reread Spirit Ring as much as other books.KarenHunt wrote:Question: Would people prefer another hint or another quote?

I think a different quote would be a better idea.

All right, start over with this quote:
It indicates a deep confusion of thinking to mistake one's own discomfort for a benefit to another.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Hmmmm..." 'Most men,' " he quoted, " 'are of naught more use in their lives but as machines for turning food into s**t.' "
Many embedded quotes. I'm quoting a line from a book.
It is the entire utterance of some character, hence the double quotes " ".
But the character is quoting someone hence the ' '.
In the text by LMB there are no stars in the four-letter word, it appears as you can guess. The censorship is mine.
Book ?
Who is uttering this ? To whom ?
Bonus #1 : Which other character, earlier, mentioned this quote to the character speaking here, according to the latter (we never see this happen) ?
Bonus #2 : Who is the original author of this quote, according to the speaker here (as told by the character who quoted it earlier)
Bonus #3 : What exactly was did the original author write ? Note that it was not in english, but the bonus would be for an "official" translation, more accurate than the quote here.

You should have offered a half bonus for the 2 stars.

The answer to bonus 3 involves, for the forbidden four-letter word, a synonym which is acceptable on a forum as respectable as this one.E Pericoloso Sporgersi wrote:Aw ??! (soft drawn-out plaintive utterance)voralfred wrote:...

A longer quote (involving, unavoidably, some hints)
Many embedded quotes in the first line. I'm quoting a line from a book.

Who is ZZZ, the first to speak ?
Who is XXX, the one spoken to ?
Bonus #1 : Who is ZZZ's YYY who earlier mentioned this quote to ZZZ, according to the latter (we never see this happen) ?
Bonus #2 : Who is AAABBB the original author of this quote, according to ZZZ (as told by ZZZ's YYY)
Bonus #3 : What exactly was did AAABBB write ? Note that it was not in english, but the bonus would be for an "official" translation, more accurate than the quote here.
Hmmmm..." 'Most men,' " he quoted, " 'are of naught more use in their lives but as machines for turning food into s**t.' "
XXX cocked an eyebrow at him. "Who said that? Your YYY ?"
"AAABBB," ZZZ returned primly. But was compelled to add, "YYY quoted it to me, though."

Hint: WWW is ZZZ's YYY's military rank. He was often referred to by that rank." 'Most men,' " he quoted, " 'are of naught more use in their lives but as machines for turning food into s**t.' "
XXX cocked an eyebrow at him. "Who said that? Your YYY ?"
"AAABBB," ZZZ returned primly. But was compelled to add, "YYY quoted it to me, though."
"Thought so," said XXX, satisfied. "Sounds just like the old WWW. He was a monster in his day, wasn't he?" XXX put another bite of roast dripping with wine sauce into his mouth, and started chewing.

Book is Memory
ZZZ is Miles Vorkosigan
XXX is Ivan Vorpatril
#1: Miles's grandfather is Piotr Vorkosigan.
#2 Leornardo da Vinci
#3 More precisely (though not as precisely as if I'd managed to find original language), the quote says:
Most men are of no more use in their lives but as machines for turning food into excrement.
#4 Ma Kosti cooked the meal.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Almost perfect.
You get the next quote and the associated point, plus 3 half-points for bonuses 1, 2 and 4
I was expecting more than just replacing a forbidden 4 lettres word by a more acceptable one (Incidentally, I found out that if I had not replaced myself two letters by stars, the forum would have replaced one letter by a star, indeed !)
So the bonus 3 is still up for grabs !

Re: LMB Quote Game
So here's a new quote:
I've seen your integrity in action. It...widened my world. I'd been raised by XXX, who is a prudent, cautious man, always looking for men's hidden, selfish motivations. No one can cheat him. But I've seen him cheat himself. If you understand what I mean.
Who is talking?
To whom?
Who raised the speaker?
What book is this in?

Re: LMB Quote Game
Well usually the etiquette is to wait for the OK of the OP
But Ghost's spectral apparitions are rare.
Also I can confirm that your answer is indeed correct
So I suggest you wait, let us say, another 72 hours after this post for Ghost to rematerialise and if he does not within this window, go ahead and post and I'll update the Sherlocks
And don't cheat!
Your answer came 14 full minutes before the end of the 5 days exclusion
Maybe Ghost might invalid it

Ooooops, sorry
You did wait 5 days 11 hours and 46 minutes before answering but the first time I checked I was in a different time zone so they appeared 5 days apart rather than 6 and I got confused between AM and PM
Incidentally I also had a wrong but fittng answer
