Yep, that was it. I think there's a possibility he knew Cordelia was the prisoner, but he'd been planning to rescue Vorrutyer's next prisoner whoever she was. So you're up, voralfred!

I heard YYY might be in the market for security guards—soldiers—an intelligence corps. Look no further, XXX is here, all three in one.
Book ?
Speaker (=XXX) the speaker jokingly self-describes at the third person
To whom is XXX talking, that might be in the market ?

Bonus #1: who else is present?

Bonus #2: again jokingly, XXX addresses the person talked to not as a private person, but rather as some entity. One half point for the exact expression YYY. I do not specify the number of words that YYY comprises
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

A longer quote, maybe ?
Nothing else has changed.
What the speaker says is longer than this quote, but is cut into three pieces by sentences "by the author", not uttered by a character. Now you have the entirety of the second of the three pieces, by far the longest.
"I heard YYY might be in the market for security guards—soldiers—an intelligence corps. Look no further, XXX is here, all three in one. I'm offering a special discount on daring rescues to any customer who places his order before midnight. It's five minutes till,"

I made a herculean effort to find the solution.
Spoiler: show
Image
That is, I searched the Bujold CD. With LibreOffice.

And yesss, I found the quote that way, which fact also disqualifies me from posting the answer. (But this is a very broad hint as to which book it's in.)

But all in all, this is good news. I'm finally succesfully resisting my bout of laziness. I'm ready to jump in at the next quote.

Meanwhile I've quite coincidentally (why is there "dental" in that word?) found a quote for the next time I'm up. It's a doozy. So hold on to your hats, y'all.

Still longer ?

I'll give you all what the speaker, namely XXX, said, but witout the descriptive sentences by the author
"Good evening, AAA BBB." (...) "I heard the CCC DDD might be in the market for security guards—soldiers—an intelligence corps. Look no further, XXX is here, all three in one. I'm offering a special discount on daring rescues to any customer who places his order before midnight. It's five minutes till," (...) "You going to invite me in?"
BBB is the last name of the person spoken to.
AAA is a noun, XXX is jokingly referring to BBB as the head of the entity YYY which I rewrite as "the CCC DDD", CCC being an adjective and DDD the entity itself, headed by an AAA

So for one :sherlock: and the next quote

Book ?
Speaker (=XXX) ?
BBB ?

Bonus #1: who else is present?

Bonus #2: AAA, CCC and DDD ?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

OK, OK !
I'l give you the whole thing.
It contains a rather strong hint ! Read carefully what I just added !
"Good evening, AAA BBB." XXXF XXXL, framed in the aperture, beamed at him. "I heard the CCC DDD might be in the market for security guards—soldiers—an intelligence corps. Look no further, XXXL is here, all three in one. I'm offering a special discount on daring rescues to any customer who places his order before midnight. It's five minutes till," she added after a moment. "You going to invite me in?"
XXXF and XXXL are XXX's first and last name, respectively.

BBB ? (I'll take the first name, if you are afraid to misspell the last name as it appears in the quote)

Bonus #1: who else is present?

Bonus #2: AAA, CCC and DDD ?
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

Oh, come on !
There may be a double handful or so of women, in all of LMB's books, who could act as "security guards—soldiers—an intelligence corps", all three in one.
But how many of them would express herself in that terms ?
I'm adding a third bonus !
Speaker (=XXX) ?
BBB ? (I'll take the first name, if you are afraid to misspell the last name as it appears in the quote)

Bonus #1: who else is present?

Bonus #2: AAA, CCC and DDD ?

Bonus #3 Name six women, *in addition to XXX*, who might possibly act as "security guards—soldiers—an intelligence corps, all three in one" (but would probably not have this peculiar sense of humor)
If you don't answer the main question, you may still answer the bonus, but then you have to name seven such women. I'll grant the half-point if I agree, but I won't tell you whether XXX is among these seven or not.

Book ? Ethan of Athos
Speaker (=XXX) ? Elli Quinn
BBB ? (I'll take the first name, if you are afraid to misspell the last name as it appears in the quote) Ethan Urquhart

Bonus #1: who else is present? Terrance Cee

Bonus #2: AAA, CCC and DDD ? AAA = Ambassador CCC = Athosian DDD = Embassy

Bonus #3 Name six women, *in addition to XXX*, who might possibly act as "security guards—soldiers—an intelligence corps, all three in one" (but would probably not have this peculiar sense of humor)

Correct !
You get the next quote as well as one point for the main question and 2 half points for bonuses 1 and 2
Bonus 3 is for grabs : now that Elli Quinn has been found, anyone can offer just six names of women other than Quinn.

Well, I guessed the book, who is speaking (and who are "they" in addition to the actual speaker). I also guessed what XXX's job was and how he got to get a head injury, as well as the job of the person talked to , and where the institution the latter works for is situated.
But I don't have the book here, and I don't remember XXX's name, nor the name of the person talked to, nor the name of the institution. Should I answer and give hints for some other player ?

I take this back: I made an assumption as to where that institution was, but thinking over it, I realized that assumption was not well-founded, so I don't remember where it is.

Book? Mirror Dance
XXX? some Dendarii, fatally wounded on Dagoola IV, but I don't remember her/his/its name
Who is speaking? Miles
Who are they speaking to? "they" (that includes Elli Quinn) are speaking to some high-ranking doctor, maybe the very head, but maybe not quite, at some cryorevival facility.

I initially thougth the facility was on Old Earth, possibly in London. Then I realized that, since the Dagoola wounded were in cryochambers anyway, the Dendarii did not have to find a facility at the first safe place they reached, but might well have taken them to some other planet they were more familiar with, and/or more conveniently close to Barrayar (possibly Escobar, but I don't want to give false leads)

Fine with me ! ;)

For the other players: note that since I did not give the chapter, it is perfectly allowed to leaf through the book if you think you can guess where in the book the quote is, and come out with the exact answer. I'd had done that, had I had the book with me.

Three days from now I'll be home, and since I know what part of the book it is, I'll find soon enough. But to give a better chance to some other player to beat me on the line, do give another hint, by all means.

“XXX was the first YYY to discover that underground species of ZZZ, you know. On our opening hike here.”
Book ?
XXX ? (a name)
YYY ? (an adjective used here as a noun)
ZZZ ? (an adjective, used here as a noun to describe a taxon of animals)
Who is talking ?
To whom ?

Any five out of six correct answers suffice for the next quote and 1/2 point, the second 1/2 point to whomever gets the sixth answer.
Any four correct answers suffice for the next quote, but then only the last found correct answer will bring 1/2 point, the last-but-one alone brings nothing.

For half a sherlock each :

Bonus #1 :
Who else is within hearing range ? What is the latter's reaction ?

Bonus #2 :
What is "here" ?
In which earler book is the "opening hike" described ?
How did XXX discover this particular taxon ?

BBB: Oliver Jole
XXX: Arial Vorkasigan
YYY: Barrayian
ZZZ ????
Here: Sergyar

When you wrote:
Book: Shards of Honor
I assume you mean, book for Bonus #2
not for the main question !

The fact that you mention Jole and Sergyar, I deduce that of course you realized that the book for the main question is "Gentleman Jole..."

So I count four correct answers for the main question, but not five.
Book (by my own deduction), AAA, XXX and YYY.
However, Jole is not BBB

So you get to post the next quote !

For the main question you get no sherlock, but I'll give you the 1/2 for Bonus #2

Any player, including you can get 1/2 for the two last answers BBB and ZZZ and another 1/2 for Bonus #1.

I'll wait a bit before updating the sherlock page, assuming someone will answer. But you don't have to wait for that before posting.
