I'll open with a question:
Are Xxx and Yyy both persons or names of persons?

(I assume probing questions must to be answered truthfully.)

To tell the truth, EPS, I'm not sure I understand your question.
Yyy decided
: what can Yyy be but a person ?
There are no cyborgs or aliens in Vorkosiverse, and in TSK world, malices don't "fence".
Ah, in Chalion's world, there are gods, and demons. Is that your question ?
Or do yo ask whether Xxx is a unique individual or a collective ? If Xxx is many people you don't need a hall of mirrors to have trouble tracking their various locations.

So maybe if you would make your question more explicit, sarsaparilla would be more likely to answer it...

Hm I actually thought up a really smart-alec answer to this, but alas... I feel it would be too strong a hint.

In lieu of answering your question, then, I'll give you a broader hint:

Xxx appears only in this book.
Yyy appears in others.

Well ,I think I can guess who Yyy is, but not the book nor Xxx.
So I would guess the "smart-alec answer" to EPS is about a head, unless Xxx is Taura, in which case the answer is rather "two or three heads", but I doubt this is that case....

Ooops ! No, I mean, Xxx minus Yyy is about a head or maybe two or three...

If

Yyy is herding cats (although in a different book),

and

Xxx is crazy as cats,

then

Yyy - Xxx = herding.

Here's an expansion:
"He thinks he's faking it," said Xxx blandly, "but he's not. He's the One, all right and tight."
The cold worms writhed again. Dealing with Xxx, Yyy decided, was like fencing in a hall of mirrors. Your target, though real, was never quite where it looked as if it should be.
Book?
Who is Xxx?
Who is Yyy?

Hint #1:
Xxx appears only in this book.
Yyy appears in others.

Hint #2:

Hallo out there...I don't remember if I mentioned I was going away for a bit before I disappeared, but just now I decided to drop by and lo and behold, there's a quotation I definitely recognize. At least the expanded version; don't think I'd have had any idea what the original quote was from.

Book? The Borders of Infinity (the novella)
Who is Xxx? Suegar
Who is Yyy? Miles. Oh, Miles.

P.S. I see that Penric's Demon is in the running for quotes. Has any decision been made yet about Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen? I guess I forget Penric was out a while ago now; I only just listened to it a month ago.

Orchestrali ?
Yoo-hoo ?
Would you please post a new quote ?
Also, please visit my poll about Gentleman Jole

The latter also applies to other participants to that game, since only EPS (and myself) have voted on that poll yet.

Hey, I'm not used to checking the game regularly anymore! Here's a new quote.
"It seems I am rescuing my fleet from you, then," he murmured between his teeth.
Book?
Who is speaking?
Who is "you"?
What did the speaker expect to be doing (instead of rescuing his fleet from "you")?

You were not being notified upon replies.
I already toggled that option ON for you.
But you can always switch it OFF again in your User Control Panel, if you prefer.

OK so let me try and guess

Book? Vor Game
Who is speaking? Oser
Who is "you"? Miles
What did the speaker expect to be doing (instead of rescuing his fleet from "you")? Protecting Aslund Station in the Hegen Hub against whoever might attack it, as per his contract

Sorry, I've been distracted this long weekend (for me in the US anyway)! Here's an expansion:
"It seems I am rescuing my fleet from you, then," he murmured between his teeth. "Not exactly what I had in mind when I came up here, but I'm glad to rescue something."
Book?
Who is speaking?
Who is "you"?
What did the speaker expect to be doing (instead of rescuing his fleet from "you")?

I've guessed for a while now that Aral is the speaker, while Cordelia is the "you", in "Shards of Honour".
A search confirmed that it's correct.

As to what Aral had in mind, I didn't go look for it. Some lingering laziness, no doubt.
So I'll give it a shot in the dark: Aral came to announce the death of Prince Serg.

If I'm 2/3 correct, do I get half a point but not the next quote? :butter:

EPS, you got the book and the characters correct but not Aral's original intent. In the interest of moving this game along I'll give you half a point and the next quote. Another half point will be available to anyone who answers my last question!

Thank you kindly, but I forfait the next quote in favour of the one who gives Aral's initial intention.

OK, OK...
Once you mentioned the book and the characters, it reminded me of the incident.

Aral had come to rescue a female POW from Ges Vorrutyer, not knowing that she was Cordelia. What he found, instead, was the first demonstration of the efficiency of the Cordelia-Bothari strike team. Though, if I remember correctly, Ges's head was not fully detached from his body, just from his blood circulatory system.
