Oh Voralfred, you're so close. If the target were incandescent, you'd have scorched fingers.
voralfred wrote:But what clothes does he wear ... during the trip to Sylvy Dale ... my guess is, old civvies.
I would guess that, during the trip, he wears a Vorkosigan House uniform, because he needs to be unmistakably recognised at first glance by the local population.
voralfred wrote:... not on the day of your quote, but on days that followed, he had horse hair lint ...
But horse hairs getting on his clothes do so mainly on the outside, thus are not hidden, but quite plainly visible.

Okay, in order:

1. The salient point in question has nothing to do with fashion or with corrective tailoring. It is purely pragmatic.

2. The hidden aspect is not deliberate and it's a standard feature.

3. Though animals play a part in it, it's not the butter bugs nor any other insects or creepy-crawlies.

4. It has to do with pocket lint. Though it's possible that his footwear can occasionally be affected too, if Miles is distracted.

5. (a quote, with an additional emphasis) ... He made no move toward the mare, but instead stood still and made a great show of fishing in his pockets. Fat Ninny butted his head against Miles eagerly, and Miles cooed and fed him a bit of sugar. The mare cocked her ears with interest. Fat Ninny smacked his lips and nudged for more. The mare snuffled up for her share. She lipped a cube from Miles's palm as he slid his other arm quietly through the loop of her reins.
"Here you go, Dr. Dea. One horse. No running."
"No fair," wheezed Dea, trudging up. "You had sugar in your pockets."
"Of course I had sugar in my pockets. It's called foresight and planning. ..."

6. ... only one place where he gets up close with/rides horses. So, examine the composition of his (very little) pocket lint.

All the elements for a Holmesian deduction are in place. It's impossible to hint any more without actually divulging the answer.

OK, so replace "horse hair" by sugar powder in the lint in my previous answer

Still, except for the arrival day, when he did wear his Imperial dress greens,
He bathed the next morning in a stream, and unpacked and dressed carefully in his new officer's Imperial dress greens. Pym wore the Vorkosigan brown- and-silver livery, and pulled the Count's standard on a telescoping aluminum pole...
he certainly did not wear a uniform on the two first days of the approach across a wilderness. For whose benefit ? The feral roses ? Unless you bring a specific quote on what he wore on the first two days of the trip (I only checked how he got dressed on the third day), I stand by my opinion: old civvies.

So he had sugar powder as pocket lint, in _MoM_ on some old civvies taken from V. Surleau, possibly even galactic style, and on one particular Imperial dress greens uniform, class 3
And most of the times, when riding Ninny, or just playing with him, patting him, most probably old civvies, and on particular occasions, well, any other kind, except perhaps Dendarii uniforms. But galactic civvies, maybe.

Yes, finally.

Only while in the Vorkosigan district can his pockets collect any sugar grit, because that's the only place where Miles happens to keep sugar cubes in his pockets.

So you're up for the next challenge.

Please give us something piquant, if possible, to offset the past sweetness? :)

OK, since you ask for it :
beef fillet with a very quick pepper garnish
I had a doubt on what nuance "quick" had here: "fiery garnish", namely very "piquant" or just "rapid", so I asked LMB to solve the ambiguity for me. So now I know the answer for sure, it is not my personal interpretation.

Main question, for a sherlock and the next quote :
book ?
context ?

and for the 1/2 point bonus, please solve the ambiguity of "quick",
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

E, that was fiendishly difficult. I thought you were either going for the lack of "uniform" for My Lord Auditor (I'm wondering if that will change with Miles' new office), or the horse boots. And I thought he brought apples for Ninny. Perhaps there was just a handy apple tree by the horse paddocks. Though admittedly, I was away from the internet for the last week, so I missed a few hint updates. Still. Difficult for a vast majority of fiends. I'm not sure if I should call it a job well done, or just glare balefully.

Well Done. *glare*

There.

I'm 90% sure it's The Dinner Party from A Civil Campaign. The quick pepper garnish was because the dishes had bug butter sauces that Miles discovered after the first course, and made the Armsmen bring out the dishes without the bug butter sauces. Quick, here, meaning the Ma Kosti was forced to improvise at the last minute because the bug butter menu was trashed at the last moment. Quick is seldom used as a synonym for fiery in American cuisine by American speakers unless they're being ridiculously pretentious. I believe there was also mention of hastily cut lemons to garnish fish, but I'm not looking at the passage in question at the moment.

Well, you can go to 100%!
Correct on all points (including the hastily sliced lemon). I was also 90% sure "quick" meant rapidly made, but at that time I was correcting the translation and I did not want to take any chance.

Anyway the next quote is yours with 1 and 1/2 :sherlock:
Human is as human does....Animals don't weep, Nine

What a characteristically Bujoldian action. That's tough. Practically anyone could have done it!

Nope. Please try again. (And that would be Lakewalker. Skywalker's a completely different series.)

(As opposed to "Haha! ...", Dutch LOL.)

Post some hypothesis, guess, shot in the dark, whatever, anything to get a rise out of Spetty.

Well, if voralfred has an idea, I suppose I should give a larger quote to give the other players a better shot at the Sherlock.
"If push came to shove. As a YYY problem-solving technique, there seems to be a precedent."
Xxx said nothing, firmly.
Book?
Who is XXX?
What is YYY (it's a hyphenated word)?
What problem-solving technique?

Yes, it sounds so familiar, but I can't place it at all. Too many possibilities. Though I have just re-listened to a bunch of Vorkosigan books, and I don't think it was in any of the ones I've finished so far on this run. A hint would be lovely.

Cryoburn, Miles to Roic ? Who answer with "saying nothing, firmly" to the suggestion of freezing the two thugs (Okita and Hans) who came to kidnapp Dr. Leiber, to neutralize them ? I seem to recall Miles suggesting it as a Kibou-daini problem-solving method - since their boss choose to freeze Sato-san to solve his problems.
