...
Which of these names/qualifiers do NOT belong in the Vorkosigan Universe?

Note: As SF productions require a story to be written first, a name/qualifier can be from a movie or TV-series (for example Star Trek, Star Wars, Gravity, John Carter, etc ...)
  • Aslunder
  • Athosian
  • Barrayaran
  • Cetagandan
  • Cylon
  • Escobarran
  • Flatlander
  • Fleming
  • Illyrian
  • Jacksonian
  • Jinxian
  • Komarran
  • Kshahtryan
  • Marilacan
  • Minbari
  • Omaticaya
  • Orbanian
  • Polian
  • Quaddie
  • Sauron
  • Sebacean
  • Sith
  • Trantorian
If there are no objections, I shall reward each correct answer (there are many more than 1) with 1/2 point, but only once for the each first mention.

+ an additional bonus for 1/2 point:
Which group of people has the same name in the Nexus and in another totally different universe NOT imagined by LMB?

Cylon > Battlestar Galactica, Flatlander > Flatland, Omaticaya > Avatar, Sauron > LotR, Sith > Star Wars, but those are just the easy ones. Fleming, Illyrian, Jinxian or Orbanian don't ring a bell, Minbari I suspect Star Trek, but very tentatively, Sebacean looks like sebum  but I hope you're not referring to it, and I'm almost sure Trantorian is from Asimov's Foundation. All the rest I can rather confidently place within Bujold's works.

Didn't you ask essentially the same question, with maybe a few more and/or a few less choices, not so long ago?

As for the bonus: I believe there are Athosians in some other fictional Universe.
But really, there is in Greece a Mount Athos whose residents should be called Athosians though they cannot bee born there as no woman (or female animal, for that matter) is allowed; Kshahtriya (without the final "N") are a caste in India; and Illyria was the name of a region 2000 or so years ago, the inhabitants of which were the Illyrians, so there are three names common to the Vorkosiverse and the real world, one of them common to a different fictional world.

As for the later quote
I do not know what this strange place is, but I do not name it safety.
I believe it is in Mirror Dance when Miles wakes up from being cryo-resurrected in the Durona's facility on Jackson's Whole

That would have been a very apt occasion, but not the right one.

As for the nationalities, now you mention it it did ring a bell : as such I think it shouldn't have warranted so much for the answer. Maybe E Pericoloso Sporgersi would be so kind as to lower my total to a more normal amount ?

Not the right book? Or not the right spot in the book?

I was thinking it was somewhere in Mirror Dance, myself. That doesn't mean it's there, of course. Just looking for a bit of clarification. :)
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

OhImage and very    too.
I think I'll wisely shut up and I beg you to accept my humble apology. Image
As an incentive to be more careful in the future I'll rearrange the points awarded as follows:
Caroline: plus 1 point as usual (instead of 6)
Voralfred: plus 0.5 point as usual (correct bonus answer)
myself: minus 1.5 points penalty

Well, reducing Caroline's win from a somewhat excessive 6 to a more reasonable 1 is fair game, my 1/2 for the bonus is also fair game; but it is not ever the use on this thread to impose a penalty except maybe the loss of one's right to answer the next question. No penalty of sherlocks, certainly. So I reinstate EPS to his previous total. And considering how little activity there is on the LMBQG thread, I don't think it wise to keep him from answering once the 5-days of the no-ping-pong rule are over (and they are). So please, EPS, answer if you can...
SO here is Caroline's question :

Hmmmm..

Your hint actually goes against my idea.
Or maybe not? Could the "place" be his own mind, his dream-land ?
I was thinking: in _HH_, Ingrey reflecting about his own dreams, fighting a weird red monster inside himself with the help of a dream-Ijada-leopardess.

Is it Ista, in Paladin of Souls, when she gets to the Porifors castle/fortress? (sorry about the imprecise terminology, I don't have my copy handy [meaning I'm too lazy to stand up and look at it  ])

Also, while catching up on the board just now I noticed the shoutout from a month ago - thanks! I actually did have a health issue, of sorts -- I had a baby two months ago. :)

Wonderful, sarsaparilla ! Congratulation for expelling the parasite out of your body (as Dr House would describe the situation). The health issue, however is not ended... what about teeth growing, and colds, and other parasitology problems...

And congrats also for your answer, after you posted it, I went to check it and you are right, though the etiquette is to wait for Caroline to confirm.

Who is it instead of the guards?

A little hint, maybe ?
I think I have it down to four books only, in two different Universes, but then, I might be mistaken...... I dont want to mislead others, so I (mostly) keep my opinion to myself.

Here's an expansion:
Two men's footsteps crossed the floor, one's booted, one's slipper-soled. I wish it were the guards, he thought in sudden sick perception.
XXX's voice rang hollow in the stone-walled chamber. "Do you smell hot wax, my lord?"

Maybe a bit more in the way of hints ?

I believe it is either in the Chalion Universe or in The Spirit Ring. It does not sound like Vorkosiverse nor TSK, but then, I could be wrong....

Thur, in the Spirit Ring, when he's hiding in the secret room as Vitelli and Ferrante go down. They're smelling the candles Thur has extinguished ?

As I don't remember any bikini waxing being performed (except maybe in Beta's Orb, but it's never mentioned in that context), it must be about either candles (non-Nexus)) or the lost-wax-casting method (The Spirit Ring).

But I think Caroline is right.

Actually it could have been wax for a seal on Barrayar (some are mentioned when Ekaterin is about to open Miles's letter, if memory serves), so the Nexus wasn't completely out 8) .

Well, all I said is that it did not feel like the Nexus to me, but I was not 100% sure. Somehow the combination of wax and boots and slippers sounded wrong for it, more actual "medieval" than "neo"-feudal somehow... And wrong feeling for TSK, also. So Spirit Ring it was, he ?

Correct!! Caroline gets the :sherlock: and the next quote.

And for those on the board who are from/in the United States, Happy Thanksgiving! There's still about five minutes left of it... :D
