OK, so now what I think is an easy one:
"What?" yelped XXX in astonishment. "You're a yyy ! You can't do--"
Book ?
XXX (a name) ?
yyy (an adjective) ?

Bonus : what should have been the end of the sentence ? (you have to justify your answer by a quote !)

First three are correct, so you get the new quote and one full sherlock

The "quote" I meant for the bonus is taken from somewhere else, not from the immediate neighborhood of the quote itself. Sorry, I should have been clearer.
So the bonus is still pending....

"No one sent me! I came by chance."
"I'd like an accounting of those chances, someday soon."
Book?

Second person?

Voralfred, this quote?

Yes, you got the correct quote for the bonus.
I'll just update the sherlock thread, not create a new one (so you won't see it as a "new post", but I'll update it just now.

Okay. I threw a coin in the fountain before posting this attempt.

Book is TSK Beguilement

Second person is Dag

I'll admit it was just a € 0.01 coin, almost worthless, but still ... :)

Caz to Umegat about how he came to be in Cardegoss. "Chance" being there maybe a little more guided than usual, given the god's involvement.

Next one from a random book at a random page :
"Sounds like a golden opportunity to sleep, to me," opined XXX
Who's "XXX", which occasion is an "opportunity to sleep" ?

Time for a little hint : both the talker and listener have appeared in other novels.

Ok, then three small hints, maybe ?

First one : whoever's wishing for a good night's sleep... won't get it.

Second one : this book is the last (to date) in which XXX appears. But not the last in which the listener appears.

Third hint (meta ^^) : I had to reflect a bit about a way to phrase my second hint that wouldn't be too revealing, because of a particularity of XXX. (and one half-sherlock more for guessing what was the problem).

I won't have much access to my computer until the week-end, if it's not guessed by then, I'll either give one last, BIG clue or declare the quote cold and move on.

Ahem...
I think I guessed who XXX is. The "metahint" was illuminating. You must remember that not only am I french, I am also involved into translating LMB into french. So some grammatical peculiarities that pose particular translation/formulation problems are rather a red flag for me.
So I also know the book, the last one to date where XXX appears.
No idea yet where in the book. But it should not be too hard, once I set myself seriously to the task. Not in the first quarter, I went over its translation in the last few weeks. Three quarters to go....

OK, so:

XXX is Bel Thorne and the book is "Diplomatic Immunity"
Bel is talking to all present, both Roic and Miles, but I suppose you mean that the listener is mostly Miles.
The opportunity to sleep is during the time Venn and Graf Station Security are supposed to nail Firka, Dubauer and the unknown assassin (not clear how many people we are really discussing here..) Roic would be relieved to have Miles indoors, for a while...

Bonus:
Discussing Bel without using the revealing pronoun "it" (or "its") is always a challenge... compounded in french where no such pronoun exists, since there is no neutral gender in french (we are French, after all...! ) Big, big hint that was ! I wouldn't have found without it.

I merely note, if you want to catch something, running after it isn't always the best way.
Book ?
Speaker ?
Person spoken to ?

Bonus : this sentence in that context is laden with many interpretations. I see at least three ones. One half point for finding the three I am able to distinguish, another for any extra interpretation I might have missed.

HINT: the speaker will come a second time at this place in a later book of this series. The person spoken to here will not be present on that second time.

Not much help, but still, a somewhat longer quote :
XXX drank more tea. "I merely note, if you want to catch something, running after it isn't always the best way."
YYY cleared his throat, and drank his tea too.
"In the meantime, I have another duty to carry out. I'm here to be seen. (...)"
Book ?
XXX ?
YYY ?
Location ("here") ?

The end of XXX's second group of lines would be too strong a hint.

HINT: XXX will come a second time "here" in a later book of this series.YYY will not be present on that second time.

Bonus : the first sentence unnred by XXX, in that context, is laden with many interpretations. I see at least three ones. One half point for finding the three I am able to distinguish, another for any extra interpretation I might have missed.[/quote]

You get the next question and one full :sherlock:

But you misunderstood the bonus question. It is not related to the last sentence
I'm here to be seen.
which you are commenting

It is related to the first sentence
"I merely note, if you want to catch something, running after it isn't always the best way."
I see three alternate meanings for this sentence; the bonus is to find them, or possibly some extra ones.

Remainder : As per standard rules, the bonus is open to all, not just to the winner of the main question and can be answered at any time. A bonus never gets cold, even after any number of new quotes have been posted and answered. (There might be some unanswered bonuses higher up the thread, I lost count....)
