"If she won, what was her prize?" Xxx demanded.

OK, so just a guess.
This sounds like what Dag= He would say in Legacy (TSK2) after his mother= She (in cahoots with her elder son Dag's brother) has done him some ugly trick among his people.
And XXX=Fawn wonders what good that was to the "winners".

Good guess! All of the questions were answered correctly (the only thing that's a little off is it's when they first get there, and she tries to start a fight (when they end up spending the night in Dar's knife-making tent)). I was hoping it might draw Caroline out to participate. :)

Your sherlock, and your quote next!

Oh, well, I am also sorry Catherine did not join us, but the quote had been there for a while and I thought (correctly, as it turned out) I had guessed the answer, so..

Next quote :
"Any chance of repairing?"
Xxx and Yyy both gave Zzz much the same look.
"By God, you'd try, wouldn't you?" said Yyy.
Book?
Xxx and Yyy? (I'll accept a slightly incorrect answer that permutes the two of them)
Zzz ?

Bonus:
Repairing what ? (but to get the bonus you also need to have Xxx and Yyy in the proper order, otherwise you don't get it even with the correct thing to repare)

Aw c'mon, voralfred, that one's too easy. The last line completely gives it away.

Well; if it's so easy, someone else will surely find it before you are allowed to...

I suppose that's a valid point, presuming I'm not the only one left out here...

There used to be other people playing this game, right??

"Any chance of repairing?"
Baz and Arde both gave Miles much the same look.
"By God, you'd try, wouldn't you?" said Arde.

I think it's in TWA, when Arde Mayhew tried harpooning a ship with a bigger one. The RG 132 suffered damage to its Necklin rods in the collision with the Triumph, Arde Mayhew and Baz Jesek realize it can't be repaired, but Miles suggest it anyway.

By the way, VorAlfred, it's it the second time you call me Catherine ^^ ?

PS : Happy New Year everyone :P

Correct. Right on all counts, so yo uget the bonus, too. For soem obsure reason the text says Baz (and not Jesek) and Mayhew (and not Arde) but hte order is the correct one.

Awfully sorry... The point is, I just got a mail from an old friend called Catherine (we exchange e-mails every few weeks or so) so I had her on my mind...

If it's from where I think it is, it's from the most recent book in the series.

I hope Caroline doesn't mind me hinting for her. And since I haven't checked it, I could actually be wrong about that, but I'm reasonably sure.

I'll make a guess: Miles (after being drugged), Cryoburn, in the cryocombs.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you,

No, it's not Dag.

But I'm just coming back from seeing "Lincoln" in the theater, and it gives me my next hint. Remember that scene at the end of "A Civil Campaign", the vote in the council of the counts ? Seeing the movie, I couldn't help but notice the strong similarities with the vote on the 13th amendment ^^ You could pinpoint "Aral" and "Gregor" as well as several others, that was too good.

Well, whoever is having nightmares was in that very room during the vote.

First sentence of Chapter 21, Captain Vorpatril's Alliance. Ivan's nightmares were not sufficiently imaginative to include biocontamination along with the wet underground setting they usually supply.

Who speaks second?
Who else is there?
Who is "He"?
