It's not in the Vorkosiverse.
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.
Re: LMB Quote Game
That's what I thought:
I believe it is in TSK2, "Legacy"
"This" : Fawn just decided to use "the" Sharing Knife, the one primed by the death of her unborn baby, to try and break the situation where Dag and other Lakewalkers are mentally stuck with the mud-hole where the mudmen are growing even though the Malice itself has already been killed.
"Something awful" going to happen : the Lakewalkers will just be stuck there forever and starve to death, if even Dag could not help the first ones to get unstuck.
"might do something awful" : anyone's guess... Malice magic is strong... and Fawn knows nothing about it...

Re: LMB Quote Game
I remember just such a situation on Barrayar.Caroline Tredez wrote:This might do something awful. But something awful was going to happen anyhow. XXX could not make things worse.
I was thinking of the time Miles's tent gets drawn down into the mud.
If he does nothing, it will slowly suffocate and kill him by lack of oxygen.
He decided to open the tent and try to escape, but he might already be in too deep or the mud might gush in. Both cases killing him too, only sooner and quicker.
Re: LMB Quote Game
voralfred's right. Miles doesn't typically think about whether his forward momentum will make things worse.
I could remember the circumstances of the quote, but I couldn't remember the name of the book. ("It's not Beguilement. It's not Passage or Horizon. What IS the name of the book after Beguilement, anyway??") And have enough stuff going on in real life that I chose not to go looking. And the kids are going to be hogging the computers for the next two weeks, so access would be limited anyway.
Unless I'm mistaken, of course, and that's not where the quote is. I'm pretty sure. Mostly sure. But I haven't looked it up.

I just realized that it was Caroline who posted the quote, not Suzette. Because of the post on the top of the page, I thought Suzette was giving us a hint, when in fact she was ..what, exactly? Helping the competition?
Suzette's agreement that I am right, considering that neither of us has access to the book right now, cannot be considered as a positive.
And since we all know one cannot prove a negative, one cannot prove that I am NOT wrong, either. So we have to wait for Caroline...

So I prefer to believe that Suzette is right

Besides, _Vor Game_ is one of the books I do have access to, and I did not find where you suggest.. There are thousands of places where Miles can cause disaster while thinking it can't get worse, but in the sinking tent, he does not express himself that way.

Besides, Caroline really likes the SK series, so she frequently picks quotes from there (though now that I've mentioned it, she might stop).

Damn, next one will have to be a classic.
Voralfred is right, of course - Fawn's about to make a hole in her husband. I'll post your sherlock right away.
Re: LMB Quote Game
This is a spoken line, so there are hyphens to please EPS. But I don't quote the line since the beginning, hence the (...)."(...) Don't attempt to camouflage your real blame by taking more than your share. I've made too many lethal errors myself to be fooled by that one."
Book?
Speaker?
Person spoken to?
Bonus (both answers needed for just 1/2 poin)
Who else is present?
What is the "more than your share" the person spoken to is "taking" ?
A reminder: two pairs of characters sharing the same last name (common to both pairs) and (at least, one can presume) the same first first name (one first first name is known for only one character of one pair, the other is not known at all, but again one can presume the two characters of each pair share the same first first name, but different from that of the other pair). To be a character a person, even long dead, must be explicitly discussed; a person whose existence can be presumed but is never mentioned explicitly does not count as a character. Second first names, like Aral Alexander Vorkosigan, don't interfere. One 1/2 point for each pair.
EDIT
Errrr... hmmmm...
The quote was by no means intended to blame to Caroline for choosing a quote in TSK...
I had decided on it immediately after being convinced I was right... I did not expect Suzette's "accusation" and Caroline's "confession of guilt'

In Mirror Dance Cordelia applies her Betan common sense to analyse Mark's motivations that led to the debacle on Jackson's Whole. She admonishes Mark that he's trying to also bear Bel Thorne's part of the blame.
The other person present is Helena Bothari, I think.
Thank you kindly, Sir.voralfred wrote:... This is a spoken line, so there are hyphens to please EPS.

But may I suggest that it would be even more evident if sentences spoken by males were pink, by females light blue, by herms rainbow, by hauts golden and by bas gray?
Re: LMB Quote Game
Come on, now, let's not make it too easy. Color coding the quotes by gender? We'd have new speed records for the ba, haut, and herm quotes.
I think you're wrong. I think it's Aral to Miles in ACC, talking about Tien's death and Miles's belief that it's his fault, when Tien is more culpable in his death than Miles (for being an idiot, and for not checking his breath mask). I'm pretty sure Cordelia is also in the room.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, you are both partly right, but none of you gives the correct answer even to the main question.
But, curiously, adding your answers, even the bonus is answered.. well, not exactly, but almost. There are so many good elements distributed almost evenly between your two answers !
What should I do? Share the full sherlock? But who gets the quote? And I can't share the bonus, there are no provisions for quarter points....
So the first one of you who gives me the whole thing gets one full point (half the answer, all the bonus) plus the next quote and the other one gets one half for helping the winner.
And if a third party gives me the full thing, (s)he gets one half and the next question, and each of you one half point for your precious help to the possible final winner...
EDIT :
BTW: at this point, I think the game should be opened to everyone, Caroline included: the third party plays just for 1/2 point, anyway (and the next quote, of course)...
But beware: the bonus is now part of the main question: one has to answer everything at once, using the bits and pieces of the two half-answers...

Re: LMB Quote Game
Look, this is absurd. The full answer is before everyone's eyes... and I will have a difficult access to the web for some times. So, in my great wisdom, I am going to take a decision:
Main question:
book : _Mirror Dance_
EPS is right
speaker : Aral
Spetty is right
person spoken to : Mark
EPS is right
Bonus :
other person : Cordelia (Elena is indeed in Vorkosigan House, but "upstairs", not present in the room)
Spetty is right
the blame:
Well, the context is, as EPS says, Miles' death on Jackson's Whole, not Tien's on Komarr
But conceptually, EPS has it wrong: the speaker (Aral) doe not shift the blame to a third party (Bel Thorne)
In this case of "death by stupidity", Aral considers that the main responsible is the dead person himself. Factually, Miles, not Tien, but conceptually the one who gave the right answer is Spetty!
So what to do?
Solomon would have had less of a headache if babies could be split as :sherlock:s can
I give to EPS the right to the next question for getting the correct context, but only one half point (Aral, not Cordelia).
As a compensation for not having the next question, I give one point (well, two half points really) to Spetty.

Re: LMB Quote Game
I'm glad to see we're making it interesting for you.
I did just go through the passage I thought it was in, and there really is nothing like it there. All mentions of Tien are with Galeni, with Miles speaking. All conversations with Miles and Aral are about Miles and Ekaterin (and I should have known better than to think The Count would have spoken that way about a matter of which he did not have firsthand knowledge).
Not that I was doubting you. I'd just convinced myself it was there, and was checking to see if something similar was there as well as in Mirror Dance (I've run across whole sections of a book that have been copied directly from another book by the same author, and thought there might be something similar happening; I'd done a pretty good job of convincing myself that it was there. As I should have known better about Aral, I also should have known better about LMB).

Who said that, what happened and in what book?He clapped a hand over his mouth, and managed in a more measured voice, “My God, I hope no one has been injured.” Except then he cackled again, louder.

What does he want to talk about?
I just opened a book to a random page on this one, so if it turns out the same quote is located in a different book as well, I'll give you credit for it.
What book?"Is there some place we can talk in private?" he asked her. "I mean really private."
