Re: LMB Quote Game
I didn't go so far as to make statistics, but I re-read most of the quotes the last few weeks. Yours is there : viewtopic.php?f=1811&t=114681&start=275 , on Tue Oct 09, 2007 8:08 pm.
I don't want to split the sherlock between winners because there may be too many of them, but I have no objection whatsoever to partial answers to help the next one who try. I'll confirm every three quotes, would that be alright for you ?

Yes, the answer came after one minute, but it took almost 7 hours to post the new question.. I wonder if we don't have a faster return...Caroline Tredez wrote:I didn't go so far as to make statistics, but I re-read most of the quotes the last few weeks. Well, what about that: you confirm every three quotes. So people can start thesaurising. Then if yo give 1/2Caroline Tredez wrote: I don't want to split the sherlock between winners because there may be too many of them, but I have no objection whatsoever to partial answers to help the next one who try. That won't be more (at most!!) than other quotes with two bonuses, which did happen quite a few times.

Now let's make you all regret to have given me so much time to thinkFor once, it won't be just a quote.
Here are EIGHTEEN quotes :
A :B :The trouble with the position, he found, was that in whatever direction you looked there fell away a glassy, uncontrollable slide down to a strange future you would then have to live in.C :People are the only mirror we have to see ourselves in. The domain of all meaning. All virtue, all evil, are contained only in people. There is none in the universe at large.D :A rose by any other name.E :The wounded want power, nothing else; they think it will keep them from being hurt again.F :Let the challenge emerge, don't rush to meet what you cannot yet see.G :I am Fortune's fool.H :I did not fully understand the situation here.I :I knew there'd be a jar turn up in this story somewhere.J :And have you stopped beating your wife ?K :That was a very, uh, knightly deed.L :She knew perfectly well what he meant, but she wanted to see him run to his limit. All the way, damn you; spit it all out.M :Just because we're adults doesn't automatically mean we can save you…N :Now he will attempt to make me feel guilty. All my fault.O :Not that every man doesn't have his price.P :Why didn't anybody stop us ? Why aren't there more regulations about this sort of things ?Q :All it needed was window slits and a moat. And a few bats and raven, for decoration.R :Human being are so fragile. The quote are literal, but things like quote marks or italics are NOT respected. There's one for each of the 18 works currently making up the Vorkosigan Saga, namely :Biology isn't destiny ?
Not anymore, it's not.
1) Falling Free
2) Shards of Honor
3 Barrayar
4) The Warrior's Apprentice
5) The Mountains of Mourning
6) The Vor Game
7) Cetaganda
8 ) Ethan of Athos

12) Mirror Dance
13) Memory
14) Komarr
15) A Civil Campaign

The Sherlock will got, in full, to the first one who can match all of the quotes with all of the books ^^.
D-10
F-7
G-4
H-5
I-6
I am pretty sure of these 5. To complete the second batch of 3, I offer three choices, but you should only confirm one (if ever), for the others
L-18

N-13

Q-17

We also know that L is not 18, N is not 13 and Q is not 17 (since otherwise Caroline would have confirmed three answers before I proposed M-14).Caroline Tredez wrote:

J - 2
N - 18

Q - 9

Re: LMB Quote Game
This is what I came up with:
1) Falling Free a
3) Barrayar b
8 ) Ethan of Athos r
9) Labyrinth k
11) Brothers in Arms e
12) Mirror Dance c
13) Memory p
15) A Civil Campaign l
16) Winterfair Gifts q
(that's A-1, B-3, C-12, E-11,k-9, l-15, p=13, q-16, and r-8). I have no idea how many of them are right (if any). I'm kind of glad my English teachers didn't do quote/book matches when I was in school though. I didn't know most of the reading material nearly as well as I do these books (and I'm still struggling). Clearly, it's been a while since I've done a re-read.

And Suzette has two correct matches among
C-12, E-11, P-13, Q-16
(I'm saying this because her other proposals are inconsistent with answers confirmed by Caroline. I do not know which are correct or not)
I hope I did not get mixed up...
Can you confirm this is really where we stand, Caroline?
So one can see a bit better, I removed the answers by sarsaparilla and myself that Caroline confirmed.Caroline Tredez wrote: B :C :People are the only mirror we have to see ourselves in. It seems that the name "touché-coulé" also exists, but it is less used. In the french version of Vol 714 to Sydney (Flight 714) the epical game between Captain Haddock and Laszlo Carreidas is called "Combat Naval", so this seems to be preferred name in french-speaking Belgium (since though a Fleming, Hergé wrote in french). Ever heard that name, EPS ?

As for Dutch and Flemish pupils, we called it "Zeeslag" (Sea Battle). Also we never played against cheating millionaires like Carreidas.
I wonder if "Battleship"and "OXO" (Noughts and Crosses or Tic-tac-toe) are still played in school?
Finally, Tintin's name in Dutch is "Kuifje", a very demure name which actually means a kind of politically neutral hair style. While the French "tintin" means "doesn't get any" with his/her current girl-/boyfriend.
Though the latter is also politically neutral, it isn't very flattering, is it? Am I right?
Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, as far as I know, "tintin" in the sense of "you won't get any" is not limited to girl-/boyfriend, but to any request: see the Wiktionary entry
tintin /tɛ̃.tɛ̃/
« Rien du tout. », « Tu peux/Vous pouvez toujours courir. » ou « N’y compte/N’y comptez pas. »
Si tu crois que je vais te prêter ma console vidéo, alors tintin.
So you believe I'll let you play on my game console? Nothing doing!
I never understood why such a heroa had such a name, but maybe Hergé chose it long before "tintin" had this meaning in colloquial french?
Anyway, back to topic :

Re: LMB Quote Game
It seems it's time for some hints :
B : The hint is the quote
C : It's toward the beginning of the book, and refers to an euphemism used by another character.
E : It's a thought, and the scene occurs aboard a space station.
P : It's about the home of a character
Q : "Human beings are so fragile" : the speaker should be obvious
R : We're talking genetics, here.
Come on, only 720 matches possible ^^ not counting Suzette's hint.

OK, let see...
If the other three are right, leave it for SPetty, use it only if one of the other three is wrong..
But probably Taura. Not in Labyrinth, she did not assert herself that much so early on. So the only other book left where she appears:
WInterfair's Gifts
(That one, I did suggest before SPetty did, so I's rather use it than P-13)
Mirror Dance ?Caroline Tredez wrote:It seems it's time for some hints :

Re: LMB Quote Game
Suzette had P-13 and Q-16 as correct matches, and you've just added B-12. Only 6 possibilities to match the remaining three quotes with their book...
Re: LMB Quote Game
With all due respect, Carroline, E-9 is correct.
In fact I am presently correcting the translation of Labyrinth and I just bumped into it. It was just a guess, based on your hint (the space station), when I posted it a few days ago, but now, somewhat to my surprise, I did find it (I had assumed it was much later in the story, not at Fell's party so early in the book)!
Which means I did not need P-13.
Suzette, you have P-13. Only a one out of two chance and you are home free!

I am aware that E-9 was correct, but I confirm by bunch of 3, and Suzette had 2, so I merely picked one of yours... By "just" I merely meant "you have now added at least one more correct answer"...
