Okay, thank you.
Next quiz. It's a doozy. Tricky though not a trick question, I think.

In this quote there is something that does not fit in the context of Lakewalker or Farmer society. What is it?... Dag went to Copperhead and collected his adapted bow and arrows. He hitched his quiver over his shoulder, unbolted his hook from its wooden wrist cuff and dropped it in the leather pouch at his waist, seated the bow in place, and locked it down. Whit came bounding up swinging his crossbow, and Dag thought to whisper, "Don't cock that thing till I fire my first shot. Noisy ratchet."
Whit nodded understanding. Except for an occasional faint clink of gear or snort from a horse, Dag's makeshift patrol was moving in proper uncanny silence. ...
Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, the entire idea of having a mixed patrol of farmers and Lakewalkers is revolutionary, but this is what the entire series is about. Farmers having weapons such as a crossbow, by itself, does not seem so bizarre. Not very frequent, sure, but not so exceptional to be considered as "does not fit".
Or do you mean that a crossbow, even in a Lakewalker's hand, is too advanced a technology? It is still pretty primitive, and roughly consistent with the other technology we see in this Universe!

I feel that attempts at an answer or just a comment, even erroneous, deserve a hint.voralfred wrote:Well, the entire idea of having a mixed patrol of farmers and Lakewalkers is revolutionary, but this is what the entire series is about. But only one hint per diem, regardless the number of reptiles.
So here goes:
Hint #1:
Voralfred, you're lukewarm. One aspect of the solution I'm expecting does have to do with the level of technology in TSK.
Re: LMB Quote Game
Let me rephrase my original post
What I believe is that a crossbow complete with a ratchet, cranequin or windlass, however you want to call it, (not just a bow with a stock, on which the string would be pulled manually) is not inconsistent with TSK technology, so I don't see this as "does not fit"voralfred wrote:Well, the entire idea of having a mixed patrol of farmers and Lakewalkers is revolutionary, but this is what the entire series is about. OK, here is my proposal: it is a problem of technology-related language, not technology per se.
After firearms became common, the verb "to fire" started to be used to mean "to shoot" even if the shooting was actually performed with an obsolete,old-technology weapon, bow, crossbow, spear-thrower, you-name-it, so it does not immediately shock us that Dag speaks of "firing" an arrow, since anyone might use this terminology now. But in TSK Universe, "firing" should not mean shooting.
Is this what you had in mind, EPS?

Re: LMB Quote Game
That's exactly what I mean.
IMHO Dag's "till I fire my first shot" is a linguistic error. I think that even today in modern English, an arrow is not "fired" with a bow!
Good catch, Voralfred. You're getting to know my devious mind.
You're up.
I wonder if it's worthwhile to draw LMB's attention to it. Shall I or will you?
See this surprising video of a cannon firing. "FEU!" in French.

Re: LMB Quote Game
OK so next question: I'll do it EPS's way:
Where is there a quote from the Godfather Trilogy in LMB's writings?
Bonus: from which of the three movies is the quote?

Re: LMB Quote Game
It's been too long since I saw James Cagney, Edward G. Robinson and Jean Gabin in those three movies.voralfred wrote:Hint #1:voralfred wrote:OK so next question: I'll do it EPS's way:

But you gave a very useful hint there.
Is the quote something like: "Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer!" ? (or is that a Sun Tzu/Ky Tung quote?)
And is it Miles in Civil Campaign referring to Richars Vorutyer?
As for the bonus, the odds are 1/3, so just a gamble: film # 2.
Re: LMB Quote Game
You got the quote right, and the bonus also (movie #2) but you did not find the correct place in LMB's works.
For guessing hte correct quote you should get 1/2 point in addition to the 1/2 bonus, but the last 1/2 point and the next quote is for whoever finds the right book and passage.
And .. BTW, didn't you have to wait for 5 days?
As a forfeit a new exclusion period of 5 days starts for you from this minute on...!
and to help the other players:
Hint #2
The sentence is indeed uttered by Miles, aloud (not a thought) but not in connection to Richars Vorrutyer
I'll update the sherlocks when the final answer is found.

Re: LMB Quote Game
OK, so let's start over
plus another one for the bonus (yes, second one of the Godfather trilogy)
But there is still one half
, plus the next question to win by providing the exact book and context
A third hint that includes both first ones is
Lord Auditor Vorkosigan (and not Lieutenant Lord Vorkosigan nor admiral Naismith) uttered this sentence aloud, it was not just a thought
And further Miles was only acting Auditor in Memory, it is not there; so: Komarr or _CC_ or Winterfair Gifts or _DI_ or Cryoburn
BTW: EPS, your exclusion period is now well over!
Since EPS did guess the details of the quote from my initial cryptic indications, he has already won one half“You know the old saying, Keep your friends close and your enemies closer?”

But there is still one half

Re: LMB Quote Game
Ah, I stumbled across it while re-reading Cryoburn : it's Miles to Wing-san, about Raven Durona, during his tour when Miles was playing "bribe me if you can". Wing was wondering if Raven wouldn't make any unwanted report to Miles' brother Mark. It's roughly at the end of the first third of the book (p.112 of my hardback edition).

Correct!
Alas, you only get 1/2 sherlock, but the next quote is all yours!

Re: LMB Quote Game
Ok, so here it is, a rather easy one :
Bonus point : I can remember at least one other dream of the same dreamer. Half a point for it, and half a point for any other dream by same dreamer.
Said by whom, where is here ?"You know it's a bad dream when waking up here is an improvement."

Re: LMB Quote Game
Ok, a little hint before Voralfred plays ping-pong : there are only two persons in the closed room where this was uttered.
Second hint : the dream involved family, hospital, and battle (now that I think about it it's pretty standard for a nightmare)

Re: LMB Quote Game
Well, I gave everybody else a bit more than my 5 days so here goes:
Main question: in Brother in Arms, Miles has a horrible nightmare involving Mark, Lt Murka's severed (but talking) head and bare-handed brain transplants... so horrible he finds it an improvement to wake up even in a cell with Duv Galeni, prisoner of komarran terrorists.
Bonus: the only dream I was able to find is in _Komarr_, very beginning of chapter 2, Miles regrets to wake up too early from a dream involving Ekaterin (or, at least, Ekaterin's hair)

Re: LMB Quote Game
Actually, Miles also has some dreams in Warrior's Apprentice, when he's recovering from his ulcer surgery and the sedative allergic reaction (something about his mother telling him he can calculate it if he's Betan enough, as well as a parade of other relatives, but not his father). I recall something about him regularly having nightmares, too, though the one with Mark is the only one I remember details for.
Waiting patiently for the next Lois McMaster Bujold book.

Re: LMB Quote Game
Perfect, so here goes 1 + 1/2 sherlock to voralfred, and 1/2 for SPetty who guessed the dream I was thinking of. (damn, I don't like putting preposition at the end, but just now I can't find another way)
Re: LMB Quote Game
OK, so another one "à la EPS"
Not far from the place of the previous question, Miles performs the entire play "Richard III", mostly for the benefit, or lack thereof, of the hapless Galeni. But where else is a short quote form the same play uttered, explicitly, as an excerpt of the play?
Bonus: I know of at least one place where still another quote of the same play appears; but there, it is not meant as an excerpt. Rather, it is a random thought, that is clearly inspired by reminiscences of the play, but not explicitly.
One half point for any such example (I may have missed others). Please provide the place within Richard III (Act, scene)

Though the bonus does demand a rather precise knowledge of Shakespeare, there are not so many places where an excerpt from a play by him is explicitly quoted for a specific purpose! There is the fast-penta scene, where Miles uses it to evade interrogation, and where else?
Hint: Note that it has to be in a Universe that shares a past with our Earth. Even in "Spirit Ring", which can be argued to be on our Earth, Fiametta might quote Dante, but Shakespeare would be in her future, not her past!

Re: LMB Quote Game
True, the original one is not a difficult one (once I stopped thinking, "but I don't know Richard III"). Not sure about the bonus. I'd have to read the play and see if any of the rest of it sounds familiar. While I do have a huge book of all of Shakespeare's plays, it's in the basement (how's that for a lazy excuse?).
But it's almost the weekend, and the kids take over the computer then. If no one else has it by Monday, I'll post the answer.

Re: LMB Quote Game
No one's looked at the scene in Warrior's Apprentice where Elena and Miles are looking through Kou's comconsole for Elena's mother, only to be interrupted, whereupon Miles improvs that they are practicing a play?
I still haven't gone into the basement, so I can't do the bonus yet.
