Today I learned that I officially hate fog. Portland has been smothered in it for 5 days straight now without a single sun break, which is probably a record here. I want it to rain or snow or hail or have sunshine. Anything but this stupid fog. It was cool at first but now its ridiculous.

Fog is dangerous while driving, flying and powerboating, granted ... but whenever I was out alone, at the crack of dawn, in my kayak, I LOVED IT.
I loved how it made the intimately familiar mysterious again. I loved how it increased one's awareness of even the smallest and most distant sounds. I loved watching the interplay of gentle ripples, and their returning rebounds from hidden objects. I loved navigating purely by sound, memory, and dead reckoning. I loved how the universe simultaneously contracted and expanded.

Paddling on the fog IS one of the coolest experiences. I love how it looks dancing on the water.
Having a barge coming at you out of nowhere in the fog however is not very fun
but thats only happened once or twice.

Fog lying in the valley below my farm; at 6.00 in the morning; sun just barely up, highlighting a sea of brilliant whiteness. It's so good it borders on the tasteless.
And then it wells up and becomes a wet and nasty grey freezing soup, ribbing all warmth and splendour out of the day.

It is written.

OK - I learned this one some time ago - but it's SO useful that I will share it as a "something I learned some time ago"
When copying files in recent versions of MS Windows, when the copy dialogue box comes across a file that already exists, it asks you "Do you want to Overwrite the existing file?" [or words to that effect]. It then gives you 4 answer buttons:
"Yes"
"Yes to all"
"No"
"Cancel"
For the longest time I have wanted a "No to all" choice.
What I learned, is that there is a little known "feature" of this dialogue box - hold down the shift key and press the "No" button - and THAT IS THE "NO TO ALL" CHOICE!!!!
Hopefully this will help others as much as it has helped me...

The wonderful thing about not planning
Is that failure comes as a complete surprise
And is not preceded by a period of worry or depression

Today I learned that the 3 year anniversary of my joining IBDOF is coming up. (Has it really been only 3 years?)
That means that when I joined I was 13 going on 14 and in middle school. Whoa. Its been a while. A couple months and I'll be a senior. Time flies.

How terrible !
How old was he ?
I have a very close relative who's attempted it several times ... fortunately I was there the last time (about 11 years ago), to help intervene.

Today I learned (yesterday, actually) that I can hurt loved ones by being skeptical about their religion. This sounds like a no-brainer, but I expected possible anger, but not hurt.
I r a tard.

In the 60’s, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

Anger is what is usually expected. But I used to get hurt when I was a bit younger when my brother would tease me and call me a liberal. Sounds funny I know, especially because I live in one of the most liberal cities. But my entire family is conservative, and even at a young age everyone knew that I was going to become a tree hugger liberal. So when my brother did that I was hurt because I felt ashamed. Now I take pride and stand behind my views. Religion and politics definitely get people's emotions going.MidasKnight wrote:Today I learned (yesterday, actually) that I can hurt loved ones by being skeptical about their religion. Today I learned that any "war story- as in an actual thing which happened to someone you've actually met who was actually in combat" makes sense in inverse proportion to how true it is.
In other words, I learned that when a war story is confused, disjointed and pointless, it's probably true. If it makes logical sense, and has a moral, point, punchline or lesson, it's almost certainly a lie.

Today I learned a good friend of mine lost her job and she's really having a hard time with it, they let her go over someone who hadn't been there as long but she made more money so the ax came down.
