...seems to think quite highly of me.
I have no intention of going into theatre professionally, but I am certainly enjoying taking the most of every opportunity while in college! I'm directing again this semester. It's a one act play called Box and Cox. It's a hilarious British farce. Unfortunately, we lost one of our actors due to a skiing injury, so we need to do auditions for her role. We're contemplating casting a guy as the role of Mrs. Bouncer though, to add to the play's humour. I can't wait until rehearsals begin in earnest! Performances are in mid March!!
I should note that I'm co-directing with a fellow student. Actually, she's also my roommate (going on four semesters now!).

... has an excellent philosophy regarding university study.

Box and Cox is a hoot! My college's theater dept. put it on during my freshman year -- I don't think I've ever laughed so hard!

... is scared of Ms. Laurie.
Laurie, any insights into how we might perform it? I'm always looking for ideas. I've watched a couple versions of it and so far I haven't really liked what I've seen. We don't want to get too slapstick, but humour is often more accessible the more physical it is, so I'd like to put a bit of slapstick humour into it. Did the actors attempt British accents? I can't stand a poorly done British accent, but this play just begs to have two British gentlemen wittily bantering back and forth. Did your college put it on with a full-blown set? I'm actually looking at making it quite minimalist (mostly due to budget and stress levels), which I'm afraid will detract somewhat from the play, since the audience will have to imagine a fair bit. Anyway. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Mary: I recall a table and chairs, a bed, a sideboard, and a pot-belly stove with a small table beside it. There were a lot of small props on the sideboard. The background was black curtain drops. A doorway was at the edge of stage-left.
The actors tried for British accents, though they slipped up often enough for me to notice, especially the girl playing the landlady.
As far as slapstick, I remember a lot of pacing back and forth and arm-waving during speeches, but nothing more physical. One of the guys had a tendency to turn to the audience after a particularly witty line and kind of wink, but he used to do that in every play he was in so I think it was ego rather than stagecraft. It did work well in this instance.

...knows what FF8 is. (what is it?)
Laurie, thanks! That certainly helps. Now to conduct auditions for Mrs. Bouncer. I've got two very excited actresses who both desperately want the role and they're both so perfect, it's going to be a tough call!
