Hey, I'm Leibs. Nice Site here. I'm here cause I'm fixing for a new quest.
I love George R.R. Martin, nothing else comes close. I've been trying other authors but they are failing incomparison. Suggestions? I tried Erikosn (Gardens was ok, but not great) I'm Attempitng Abrecrombie (It's ok) but really I need some new Martin. Oh, and I did read the Dark Tower Series and it was fantastic, so don't suggest that, I LOVED IT!!! I wish King would just write Epic Fantasy!!!!.

Anyway, Robert Jordan blows, Rand is gay, and I read about 5 of those novels before I realized I was wasting my time.

Potter was good, J.K. is no R.R. but I liked her.

Reading C.S. Friedman felt like taking shrooms, it was skattered and all over the place. (I wish it would've worked cause I heard good things.)

Oh, I loved the new novel, by Rothfuss, that guy can write.

So if you think you can suggest a good series with some actual character development and not some gay magic let me know. I don't mind reading SciFi.

clong: is Mr. Modesitt's stuff considered fantasy?

If so, I really like how he handles magic in the Recluce series.

Yes (except for his science fiction that is). To some extent magic and fantasy are inherently intertwined (although I have seen arguments that specific books without magic still qualify as fantasy). I guess the question here has to do with the quantity and nature of magic used.

My favorites use to be Dean R. Koontz or Anne Rice but right now I'm not into either. I've read just about everything by Anne Rice and I've read over half of the books by Dean R. Koontz. Anne Rice went *crazy* and Dean R. Koontz is too predictable for me.

I use to own a cat named Satan... hence ... Satanz_Owner

5. How you found IBDoF
From IBlist. I'm constantly looking for new books/authors to read.

6. Name one book you would never recommend to a friend
I would never recommend a book by Robert Jordan. So as not to offend anyone I won't mention my feelings in regards to his books.

Iâ€™ve been a member from around July/August 2008. Iâ€™ve got quite a library of books, audio books and comics. At my last count 26/01 this year I had 371 titles. 24 Audio books, 127 comics and 220 novels and picture books (and these are only the ones I have with me in Auckland, New Zealand I have a further 282 Disney comics and 269 novels in my Mum and Dadâ€™s garage, packed away in boxes. I wish I could get to them easily, but my parents live in Red Cliffs, Australia).
During this year I will have easily collected 50 new titles. My lastest 2 purchases is â€˜My Word is my Bondâ€™ the Roger Moore autobiography. (I was fortunate to meet the man a couple of weeks ago and he signed the hard cover. Heâ€™s 81 years old and is looking tired, but well) and â€˜The Tales of Beedle the Bardâ€™ by the one and only JK Rowlings.
Sad to say it, but I have not finished reading all of my books and comics yet. This is largely due to the fact that I spend more time writing stories than reading them.

Hello!

I find myself in that situation sometimes, but I usually start with the best sellers section and work my way round the store from there. I can spend and hour or two (sometimes more) looking for a book. And the greta thing about Waterstones (as with most other bookstores) is that the majority of them have reading corners where you can look through them before you buy.

True, but I usually end up walking way from the best sellers area in disgust. Sorta looking for stuff I haven't read over and over again. Everything seems stale to me... like been there read that already with the only difference being the author.

It's hard to make recommendations without knowing more about what you like (and the only thing mentioned in your "welcome" post that I've actually read is the one you would never recommend to anyone). Have you read Guy Gavriel Kay, Robin Hobb, Barry Hughart? What science fiction authors do you enjoy?

I've looked at Guy Gavriel Kay but I haven't decided about him yet. Robin Hobb I already own and I haven't heard of/seen Barry Hughart.

Hughart has written three funny and moving books set in a pseudo alternate ancient China.

Have you read Bujold's Vorkosigan books, or just her fantasy?

For Kay, I think Tigana and Lions of Al-Rassan are both excellent books.

If you like Erikson, you might try Glen Cook (much less ambitious books, but with similar grit and dark humor). Or R. Scott Bakker (big books, but less complicated than malazan).

And then of course there's GRRMartin's Song of Ice and Fire, which many feel is the best thing being written in fantasy, but has gotten mixed reviews on this board.

If you're rating books at iblist it's new recommendations engine might give you some good suggestions (I worked on a previous iteration of the recommendations engine...I'm not entirely sure how this new one is set up to work).

I own The Prince of Nothing trilogy by R. Scott Bakker... but I haven't been in the mood to read more than a few pages. I have the first book in the Song of Fire and Ice but again I haven't been in the mood for it.

I'll check out Cook, Hughart, and/or Kay.

The guitar player for my favorite band at the time (Savatage) was recently killed by a drunk driver so I picked MidasKnight in his honor (one of their songs was titled Midas Knight).5. How you found IBDoF - I don't remember but I have no idea what IBList is.
6. Name one book you would never recommend to a friend - anything by William Faulkner
