As I walked through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place where there was a Den, and I laid me down in that place to sleep: and as I slept I dreamed a dream.
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." -- Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice
Isn't this the book from which Suegar's "scripture" came from in LMB's "The Borders of Infinity" novella (third novella in the collection "Borders on Infinity")?
"... but the pilgrims went up that hill with ease, because they had these two men to lead them by the arms; also they had left their garments behind them, for though they went in with them, they came out without them."
The style does look similar indeed!

In sooth, I know not why I am so sad:
It wearies me; you say it wearies you;
But how I caught it, found it, or came by it,
What stuff 'tis made of, whereof it is born,
I am to learn;
And such a want-wit sadness makes of me,
That I have much ado to know myself.

I must be extremely lucky to be the first one to log in after laurie posted, since certainly all of you must recognize this at first glance. And this is one of the very few plays by Shakespeare I happen to be able to recognize the first lines of! Add "When shall we three meet again....", ""Now is the winter of our discontent ", "Boatswain! - Here, master: what cheer?", "Two households, both alike in dignity," and that is about all.

"Now, what I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else, and root out everything else. You can only form the minds of reasonable animals upon Facts: nothing else will ever be of service to them."
Not yet three weeks since the original post, so it is not really so very , but more than two weeks since the last hint... nothing's likely to happen now.
Zybahn, do you want to offer a new hint? If not, what about a deadline, after which one should call it cold.

ok... Harold Bloom places this author rather high on the Western Canon.
(Deservedly, I think.)
[I won't set a time limit... feel free to post at any time. I'll be the first to admit I don't check in regularly so please don't waste away waiting for me.]
Well, if the last hint did not bring an answer in one week, it would probably not bring one later. Do you want to post a new hint, and give it one more week or so to bring an answer? By then it will be more than a month, and one could call it cold.
