Well, since I did not recognize the book, what other hint did I have that it was fantasy?

Pratchett's Equal Rites?
The Princess Bride.

Pratchett, but not equal rites.

(I realise ive been sticking to one author, but my other books are not that well known, so you'd be guessing for ages.)

Dammit, and it's one that I've read too LOL But like Piers Anthony's Xanth novels, all Pratchett's books tend to melt in together LOL

Very well. Try this one:
JOHOR reports:
I have been sent on errands to our Colonies on many planets. Crises of all kinds are familiar to me. I have been involved in emergencies that threaten species, or carefully planned local programmes. I have known more than once what it is to accept the failure, final and irreversible, of an effort or experiment to do with creatures who have within themselves the potential of development dreamed of, planned for... and then - Finis! The end! The drum pattering out into silence...

She, the author, has expressed a severe dislike against quite a lot of the internet, against rubbish journalism and against a host of other irritants.
The book in question is a not straight forward book, but it is a book of impending apocalypse, guiding "spirits" and their strive to undo the damage that some enemy "spirits" seek to inflict upon the species in question, namely us humans and the shortcomings of our species.
After the inevitable apocalypse, a better humanity crawls forth; this in accordance to the rather set writing guidelines in this subgenre of the SF's. Otherwise the plot buildup is not straightforward or akin to what you will have read in dozens of other stories.

The author has got to be Doris Lessing. I haven't read any of her scifi, so I'll guess Shikasta: Re, Colonised Planet 5 .

The Sound and the Fury it is. You're up!

Looking back a few pages, it appears that Sherlocks are indeed in order. (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

That rings a bell... Is it Papillon, by Henri Charrière?
though I remember reading it in French, of course.

The french text says "treize ans" (thirteen years, not fourteen) so maybe it is not that.

My translation reads "fourteen." I googled and fourteen it was. I tried googling the French with "treize" and "quatorze" and a lode of nonsense came up so I stopped since it's not worth my time.

Since my translation is "Papillon" and not "Butterfly" it means you are correct. Since you are correct you get un Sherlock.
