I'm a broadcast engineer, with very heavy involvement in Closed Captioning for the last 30 years. For the last five or so have chaired one or two of the Working Groups that Standardizes the systems. In 2005 our Secratariat - CEA - won a technical Emmy for this. CEA shared this with two of the major broadcast networks, one of whom I work for.

Very into food, I've done a half dozen weekend classes and a Boot Camp at CIA. This is a pastime I share with my wife, who does most of the cooking.

Do some wood working/furniture making. Current project is building a curing box to dry cure ham and sausage, Ruhlman again. Used to do a lot of technical theater, with a couple of off-off-Broadway lighting design credits. Met my wife doing this.

It's great to see new members coming onboard, welcome to everyone.

ntsc, also good to have another wanna-be foodie. Although I consider myself to be more of a foodie voyeur (enjoy reading the books and watching the series, but don't really apply it to my own cooking). Brad is the real foodie on the forums.

Hello all. This looks like a terrific site. Very hard to find decent book/reader's sites, so I'm impressed.

A little about me...I'm a 61-year old retired widow. Born and raised in the Northeastern USA, and now living in Texas. I've always loved to read, and confess to being book-greedy. I hate to give up my books once read, (I do like to re-read books) but I have brought myself to donate some of those recently.

Ok...on to the questions, and I shall try to answer to the best of my ability. Decisions...choices....

1. Favorite genre

I cannot decide on a favorite genre. There are times I prefer to read fantasy, others I like contemporary fiction, others mystery...you get the picture.

2. Favorite author in that genre
3. Favorite author not in that genre

I am combining the two questions, as I don't have one author who is my favorite, but quite a few. I shall list some of them.

Stephen King, Michael D. O'Brien, Diana Gabaldon, J.K. Rowling, Agatha Christie, Dean Koontz, John Jakes.... I will stop now.

4. How I found this site?

I'm truly not sure. I think there was a link on another book site I visit. I immediately added this place to my "favorites", but didn't get around to joining until today.

5. How did you choose your member name?

It's a nickname my father had for my mother. Sentimental...

6. Name a book you'd never recommend to a friend.

The Sound And The Fury because it disappointed me.

7. Top 5 books/series:

Lord Of The Rings - Tolkein
The Dark Tower Series - King
The Outlander Series - Gabaldon
The Children Of The Last Days Series - Michael D. O'Brien
The Harry Potter Series - J. K. Rowling
Climbing Mt. Bookpile, constantly.

Hi, NTSC.

How'd you like to help adapt my next basement for ruhlman-style charcuterie ?

I'm looking to adapt part of a cool insulated unheated basement for diamondboard wine racks, and free-hanging charcuterie (i.e., hung sausages, perhaps a hung ham or two, etc.).

If you have quals and/or ideas in these areas, pm me. :)

Morning! My name's Jenn and I'm in Toronto Canada. I've been a massive book-geek for many years. :)

1> Fav Genre would have to be thrillers. To break it down even further I would say Brit thrillers with lost of dead bodies :)

2> Fav Author at the moment would be Stuart MacBride. He's brilliant in the Police Procedurals even if he has only written 3 books.

3>Fav Non-Genre Author is a bit tougher. Today I would say it was Christopher Moore becuase he knows how to make me laugh.

4> I've been Jebbie for as long as I've been on the internet. And since I was born in '74 and there are five billion other Jebbie's in this world I decided to tag that on the end. (An old boyfriend's sisters enjoyed calling me Jebedia and it stuck so I just shortened it slightly.)

5> I found IBDoF by wandering from the IBList. Although, I have no idea how I surfed into the IBList but am sure glad I did!

6> I would never ever recommend The Handmaid's Tale to a friend. I have read it twice (once for school many years ago) and can't stand the syntax. I loved the premise of the book but it was so painful to read through. (Hannibal Rising definately comes a close second.)

7> 5 Top Books/Series?
a) Slammerkin by Emma Donoghue
b) Prey series by John Sandford
c) Lullabies for Little Criminals by Heather O'Neill
d) anything by Margaret Yorke (her billions of mysteries)
e) DS Logan McRae series by Stuart MacBride

Thanks for having me here, and here's to many more postings! :)

Favorite genre is young adult fiction (and I'm over 40), especially fantasy/science fiction lite.

Favorite author (at this moment) is either Lois McMaster Bujold or Megan Whalen Turner.

Favorite author not in favorite genre is George R.R. Martin or Beverly Cleary (for her autobiographies).

My member name is the one I use on every board I've ever posted on. It's a combo of where I live & what's most important to me.

I found IBDoF from entering the IBList which I found from a wikipedia entry on Lois McMaster Bujold.

I would never recommend "Wicked" to a friend - I'm sure its a classic, I know many people who adore it, but I've tried to read it multiple times and can'tget past the first chapter.

Top 5 series would be:
1. The Thief/The Queen of Attolia/The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner
2. The Golden Compass Trilogy by Pullman
3. My Friend Flicka/Thunderhead/Green Grass of Wyoming by Mary O'Hara
4. Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold
5. A Song of Ice & Fire by George R.R. Martin (though I'm enormously frustrated by the author's inability to write as fast as I read).

I'll add another bit of info:
A book no one else (or very rarely) has heard of that I love - Precious Bane by Mary Webb

Hi! I never seem to find these things until after I post elsewhere (last forum I joined, it was a good three or four months after, so I didn't post an intro).

I'm a stay at home mother of four children (two toddlers and two teens, one marriage) in the United States. Regarding the questions:

1. Favorite Genre- I mostly read fantasy and sci-fi, but I also have a weakness for diet/exercise books and crafting books. I like cooking, but have found that by and large, cookbooks are fairly difficult to navigate if you're looking for something specific.

2. Favorite Authors(seriously, no "s"?)-
Lois McMaster Bujold, Terry Pratchett, Diana Wynne Jones, Robin McKinley

3. Favorite Author that's not in Favorite Genre
Stephanie Pearl-McPhee

4. How/Why you picked your Member-Name
it's kind of complicated...

5. How you found IBDoF
from the Lois McMaster Bujold list (indirectly. Someone posted something relating to another website, and I found this searching for the other one, though I never did find the other website).

6. Name one book you would never recommend to a friend
Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. It horrified my teenage soul (when I read it) that someone would sink so low based solely on the fact that he didn't *look* depraved.

7. Top 5 books/series
1. Miles Vorkosigan series
2. The Watch Discworld books
3. Chalion series
4. Derkholm series
5. Daria series

You might also let us know whether you're entering the forums from the iblist site or ibdof: I'm entering from ibdof.

1. Favorite Genre
~Mystery
2. Favorite Author
~Agatha Christie
3. Favorite Author that's not in Favorite Genre
~Charles Dickens and since I work with kids, Mo Willems
4. How/Why you picked your Member-Name
~Shell is my nickname and I live in Alaska
5. How you found IBDoF
~Googled an Agatha Christie title
6. Name one book you would never recommend to a friend
~Lost by Gregory Maguire - not badly written, but badly misrepresenting of itself
7. Top 5 books/series
~The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgsen Burnett
~Little Women - Louisa May Alcott
~Psalms - David
~A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens
~Harry Potter series - JK Rowling

As you can see none of my favorite author's books is in my top five. She is fun to read, but nothing that "speaks" deeply to me.

So a little about me, I am finishing up college so I do not have time to read for pleasure. Not because I have no time in the day, but because I will not put a book down until I am done with it, and that is what I do not have time for.

I am listening to my first book on tape - The Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien and it is awesome. I am only listening in my car so it is taking awhile. It is no substitute for reading, but for now it is perfect.

I HAVE to read before I go to bed, but since I have the "can't put a book down" problem, I will read either a chapter from the Bible, some Far Side or Calvin and Hobbes.

That is it for now and it is great to be here.
