Today I learned that no good deed goes unpunished *sigh* I drove my ex and the kids to his dad's today and then drove back to his place to surprise him with a bit of de-cluttering. There are a few large pieces he's been meaning to get rid of for months (a broken, decrepit old exercise bike, for one). So I cleaned the stickers off the new windows he just had installed in the kids' rooms, vacuumed the hallway, and then lugged the exercise bike downstairs.
As I stepped out onto his porch, I heard the door slam shut behind me. *PANIC* His door is one of those perpetually locked things that you can't LEAVE unlocked, you can only open it with a key to get in. So there I was, locked out of my ex-husband's house, with my purse, house keys and car keys INSIDE.
Fortunately, I also learned that you can still depend on the kindness of strangers

His downstairs neighbor let me use his phone to call Jeff, then DROVE me out to Jeff's dad's place, waited while I picked up the keys, then drove me back downtown AND gave me bus fare to get back to Jeff's from there. TOTALLY sweet guy! I was so grateful, I probably would have washed his skivvies for him if he had asked.
So now that I'm home and happily ensconced inside my own little fortress, I swear I will never try to "surprise" anyone with cleaning again!
