Welcome back! - It's menudo time this weekend.

Alright, well, I thought that I would finally be able to get back into the swing of things here, but, fate it seems, has thrown another curve ball at me. One of my ten classes has ended, however, it's been replaced by the need to study for the Academic Decathalon. I just got my study guides last Friday, so I have to study pretty hard for the next two months. Round 2 is held on Jan. 27 and Feb. 5... I'm at a pretty serious disadvantage right now. Everybody else on the team has had since May to learn all this stuff so... yeah. At least this year's theme is interesting (to me at least), China. I have to learn: the basics of art theory, the basics of music theory (and how to read and write music, basic economic theories, climatology, and various math skills (ranging from basic math to calc). Then I get to memorize everything in those subjects that applies to China (art/music history/styles/differences from Western styles and the economic history of China (my timeline extends to the Xia Dynasty (2070 B.C.) in every subject
))
Heh, so, as is usual, I'll try to drop in, but the chances I'll be able to are very slim.
(Heh, I'm actually writing this after a 9 hour study period (basics of music... grr)

I'm back :D
Well, I've been persuaded to return and hover about the place a bit. I don't plan to post with quite the vigour I used to but I think I can still contribute here and there - that is if I can stop myself from looking for an edit summary box when I make a post (quite literally, too :S). Of course, this is me saying this now - I may well change this outlook after about five days *cough* minutes.
If people are interested, I thought it might be a good idea to post about what I have been up to on the 'net - and it revolves around one thing: Wikipedia. I've become rather involved in the project and you can see this by my userpage. One thing that this of course does not easily allow is solid debate, and I guess that's one of the reasons I've come back here, although I intend to do it better than I used to...
I know that last time I managed to annoy people around here and I am determined not to do so again. Although Kvetch may decide to be nice and cliched and state that I have 'grown up', I think it's merely being enlightened by the community that has developed around Wikipedia and freenode (IRC network I staff). There are a lot of wise words floating around the policy documents and I intend to follow them. But, hopefully, I'm still the same person underneath
I've also been working on Heather's website, albeit more sporadically than I hoped. We'll have it finished soon enough. Additionally, note my new interest in making long, drawn out posts... another quality of a Wikipedian.

hehe I'm glad our little conversation yesterday got you to at least post
I didn't figure out my php issue, but I *did* decide to just export the entire fricking table I was poking at, and that was just what I needed LOL I was trying to reinvent the wheel by coding into a results page

*snicker* I was trying to write a query to get a certain set of results from two tables in the database, but I couldn't figure out how to get them to display properly, or how to correlate the data from one table with the data from the other table *sigh*
Turns out all I needed to do was just export the whole damn table.

Seems like you may have been trying to accomplish an outer join of some kind - ie you have a set of results in one table - and a set of results in a 2nd table that some of them have a matching key of some kind in the first - and you want to display either the intersection of the 2 tables or the first with all of the matching results from the 2nd.tollbaby wrote:I was trying to write a query to get a certain set of results from two tables in the database, <snip> or how to correlate the data from one table with the data from the other table *sigh*

A fiddly damn piece of SQL - especially when you extend that to a 3rd and 4th table.
I have had some very un-fun hours with those SQL issues on the IBDoF codebase...

I am in awe!
I'm still struggling with making my FileMaker database (home library catalog) truly functional and truly relational! And FileMaker is a much higher language/set of rules than SQL. I HAVE an older version of MySQL for the Mac and I have never been able to understand it.
I guess I'll just have to keep slugging away at FileMaker. At least I have learned enough that I understand (sorta) about the "outer join" that KiltanneN mentioned. Because FileMaker DOES do joins, and the third party books I own give some background on general database theory before they go on to FileMaker specifics.
(me stands in the corner, wistfully watching younger, more accomplished people fiddle with database construction, then wander off to try stitching instead.)

Sue, I didn't have a damn thing to do with CONSTRUCTING the bloody thing. I only retrieve information and occasionally make tiny changes (and once in a while I'll be allowed to modify the programming on an existing page to either update it or to create a new one LOL as long as I promise not to break anything). I had to buy a book (appropriately, a Dummies one) because people got fed up with my stupid PHP questions, and I am SO not talented at programming at all.
Trust me, I'm far more in awe that you are actually CREATING a database to catalog your books! I had mine listed in an Access database, but I didn't like how I had set it up, and I didn't know how to get a coherent report out of it

Well, Decathalon ended, but now I have next year's subject: The Civil War. So, seeing as I didn't really learn the basics I needed to last year, I'm starting way early, so, for the next month at least I'll be extremely busy, if not far longer... I'll still check in every day though.
Oh, yeah, by the way, I got 5th place out of 81 people in Super Quiz, Division 1 varsity competition. (which is to say 5th out of 210ish people varsity for all divisions)
Though it may seem good, the scores themselves were pretty sorry, so I'm shooting for first place this year, hence the early start. Wish me luck

I am off for vacation to sunny Florida. I am trying to narrow down my shoe selection. I am down to 6 pairs, but I may have to sneak a pair back in. I'm going to try wakeboarding, I love the beach and it looks like so much fun.

I'll "officially" sign-out now, although I may have time tomorrow morning for a last visit. I may also have time tomorrow evening and Sunday and Monday evenings at my daughter's house to check in.
Other than these tentative check-ins, I will be gone to the stitching retreat from tomorrow (Wednesday, March 14) through the following Tuesday (March 20). The retreat ends on Sunday, but I will stay over on Monday for a day of recuperation-before-I-hit-the-road PLUS a smaller stitch-in which is a monthly event in Omaha.
I will be back in Columbia on Tuesday, but may be too tired to check in with all of you until sometime on Wednesday.

Enjoy your retreat, Sue. And don't take it too hard on yourself about the prescription incident you told us on the Pet Peeves thread. I'm pretty sure she enjoyed herself. I was the one sitting next to her and she chattered my ear off. Hehehehe. And she got me to log onto this board.voralfred wrote:Enjoy your retreat, Sue.
