If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you,

A fictional female human, by a male author writing non-speculative fiction in English. The author was neither British(UK), American, Canadian, Australian nor Russian. The work was published 1900-1970. It is an IBDoF classic. It is not set in the US.
No, I'm defeated. The only possibly way round I can think of is James Joyce (who isn't from what is now the UK), but I can't think of a book that fits.

Increasingly obvious clues coming up
. . . If all goes as expected, by 2056 Kvetch will know the answer to this one.
. . . This character thinks what was generally regarded to be the longest sentence in English Literature (at 4,391 words) until this record was eclipsed by the 2001 publication of Jonathan Coe's The Rotters Club

Who am I? - 20 Question Game
I am thinking of a person, real or fictional, living or dead. This mystery person is related in some logical way to books and literature.
The group can ask 20 questions to try to figure out the identity of the mystery person.
I will only answer yes or no (maybe a little more info ).
A guess will be sent ONLY via PM - and does not count towards the question count.
Only one guess per person per day allowed.
The first person to correctly guess the person is the winner, and gets one (1) Sherlock point.
Ask away!
