If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you,

It feels very Ecolitan... at first I went through the Cyador books (green & white reference) but I didn't see anything, and Whaler interacts in social situations more often than Lorn.
I've lost my Ecolitan omnibuses (omnibi?), though, and it's been so long since I read them... so I really can't give a complete guess, but I'll say that X is either Jimjoy or his wife (whose name slipped my tongue) and the book is Ecolitan Enigma. Maybe.
Crap I know the book is Chaos Balance and it is Nylan going through his trial with the forest. The speaker is where I am challenged I know it is the woman who is one of the first to come to the Angels who insists on being a warrior and dies in a battle, her daughter is upset because Nylan could not save her.
The Chaos Balance (paper back: page 505) Image of a woman in brown tunic talking to Nylan. The speaker isn't named, her daughter is called Niera in "Fall of Angels".
Torybear should get at least half the Sherlock if not all.

The answer to the bonus is actually in Fall of Angels - she dies in Gerlich's attack on the Black Tower... but it was purely a bonus (I thought the original question was too easy )
Antangil make sure you go to the Sherlock thread and give Torybear the point.
/Someone still owes me a Sherlock point but I'm not mentioning names (Gil-Galad)

The general condition of being human is that nothing satisfies most people for long. Those with no poiwer want power. Those with power want more power. Those with food want more food or luxuries. Those with a roof over their heads want a castle. But everyone wants someone else to do the work. So what else is new?
