The Sherlock Thread
Moderator: clong
Gee, perhaps I should start a quote game over in the JRR Tolkien thread ... that'd get my score up to 100 in no time

ΦBK — Greek initials of the motto "Love of learning is the guide of life."
jwebster wrote:BKM,bob k. mando wrote:HEY, i did not nominate jwebster to be "Deep Thinker", i nominated him to be "Deep Thought", a literary reference to which everyone here (with the probable exception of midas) should embarassed that they didn't twig to.
i suppose this means that there's an unintended sherlock point out there waiting for someone to grab it.
One of the most ironic (well, technically, it's coinceDENTal, not ironic) things about that nomination, is that people frequently come to my desk at work and say "I've got a question." My most common response is to immediately say, "42."![]()
Although, maybe you were referring to the part about:If so, I apologize, but I must fulfill my purpose. Its creation annoyed a fair few philosophers, who felt that it was taking over their turf.
jwebster wrote:Oh, please.Like it was tough after all those hints I dropped. Besides, wasn't it Earth that was blown up by the Vogons, and Deep Thought that created Earth? Of course, Kilt does need that Sherlock just to get out of the negatives.
So where's my 4-leaf Sherlock?bob k. mando wrote:what, a chance to make the board admin go even MORE negative on sherlock points, you think i'm going to pass that up? you need to go back and meditate on my 'Bump Before The Lock' thread till you properly grok my attitude towards authority.

seriously, it's been a loooong time since i've read 'Hitchiker' but i'm virtually certain that 'Deep Thought' was the computer that wasn't 'worthy to process it's smallest subroutine' but did design the computer that could properly ask the question 'What is the meaning of life' to which Deep Thought had already provided the answer ... which noone understood.

And another. I'm on fire.jwebster wrote:Referring to Jim and Gorbash, who share Gorbash's (dragon) body in Gordon R. Dickson's "The Dragon and the George", and the wizard Carolinus.holmes_douglas wrote:Nay Gorbash, Carolinus promises me freedom from your carcass.
Not a quote, but the context and names should be worth a Sherlock.

bob k. mando wrote:where did you see that there would be a 4th 'shadow' book? i don't see anything on card's web site.
This should have been worth a Sherlock, too.jwebster wrote:I believe Card's afterword in Shadow of the Hegemon explained that he'd originally planned the Shadow series to be a trilogy, but that the plot kind of grew until he decided it needed to be a tetralogy. The fourth book will be called Shadow of the Giant.

The new standings are:

what, i've had to correct that 'deep thought is the earth' misapprehension twice in the last week and i don't get an honorable mention point for it?
bah humbug. anyways i haven't been following this thread for quite some time so i guess that, by the rules as they were originally established, jweb gets a point.
i don't know if you guys have counted it yet or not.
ps -- didn't i have a point from a long time ago? ah well.

Should have been done long ago."

Yeah were are all my points? I'm sure I must have one hidden somewhere for doing something? hmm probably not actually. Still I think brad should get a point for this:

Well, my other thought was Lorn- but I was thinking he was talking to his sister- but I couldn't find it where I thought it was. But now with your new hint- I found it! It is Lorn talking to Ryalth in Magi'i of Cyador (page 269 of the paperback) when he is talking about his parents and his fears for them.

We've been a bit lax on this one. Seems people have been taking points more than giving them. [Yes jwebster, I will award the point for the Gorbash quote (sorry to take so long)].Basic rules ...
4. The decision to award a Sherlock point is SOLELY made by the asker of the question. Arbitrary decisions that are obviously inaccurate WILL be honored - but may be deducted from the score of the asker if the judges deem it worthy of action ...
That makes 2 points I've awarded. The earlier one was for Tarzan to superenigmatix.
I think it just as important to track who's giving out the points.
