Elvis, my dear friends DeAnn and Jim's cat passed away sometime in the wee hours of the morning.

He was everything you'd want in a pet. Loving, friendly, cuddly, full of personality.

I loved him like a child.

And so I post this little tribute to him and ALL the sweet animals that share our lives and love us unconditionally.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I REALLY love that. I've lost only two special pets over the years, but I miss both of them SO much. And, as I've posted elsewhere, two of the three cats in this house are getting on in years. I'll treasure this post always.

I found it very comforting when I had to put my feline "son" to sleep. He was my closest companion for almost 20 years.

I missed his presence in my life for ages...in fact, I still do.

I liked it too. We had a cat for which I hope that is true. He was a dear old thing. I miss him still.

Aww, I'm sorry. I lost a pet about two years or so ago, Luke. He was the best fish ever. I used to talk to him all the time and he would sit and stare at me. He would stop eating to come to the side and listen to me talk nonsense. Thankfully, his death was painless.

I'm really sorry to hear that, please give her my sympathies...

I know exactly how this feels...

We had a dog when I was growing up called Dumbo (originally his name was Derward after our neighbor who died shortly thereafter--the dog wouldn't answer to Derward anyway) but he was the best dog I can remember having. He was half Siberian husky and half rat terrier. Basically, he was a husky with stranger coloring who was smaller than normal...

Anyway, he defended us against racoons, opossums, and etc. And he died one hot summer day when he was a mere ten years old. My brother and I found him dead under ther porch.... He's the only dog I've seen my dad bury...

I just realized that most of us have rushed to tell about our own losses when we could have been showing empathy toward you.

As you said, you lost a friend. And that's always hard — and permanent.

As I was repeating James Whitcomb Riley's "Prayer Perfect" while I was working on my church's prayer shawl project, I realized that the following lines could be addressed to you

Grant unto the sorrowing all release from pain
Let their lips with laughter overflow again

My thoughts are with you in your loss.

Yes, absoluely. Animals like cats are special because they develop more distinctive personalities which ties the owner to them more. Or the owner's friend.
