Today I learned how to access 19th century vital records (birth, marriage, death) from the Netherlands. This is thanks to a correspondant on the talk board run by my software company. My search turned up my great grandmother and two of her sisters — and the excellent thing is I didn't need to know Dutch to find them. The search engine was in English, and the names and dates were clear enough to identify the records (on the tentative basis that genealogical searcher need to keep in mind).
This also makes my day happy — but I won't post it twice.
Sue

What search engine was this? Is it only for Dutch records?
Sorry I seem to have missed this question.

Sue

The specific site was only for records in the Netherlands (and I can only get to it by following the specific directions given to me on my software discussion board). If you send me a personal message I will respond with the specifics — or give me your email and I will email it all to you.

While I was working with the Netherlands redords, I also found a French-based site called GeneaNet which has resources (and on-line family trees) in many countries. They do some translating for you (you sign on in English, French, or whatever) but getting in touch with posters and sources requires some way to handle the original languages

Hope this helps you.

Today I learned there was an abduction atempt on a 10 year old girl at the park in my town last night. My youngest daughter is 9, this has me a bit freaked out! You don't expect something like this to happen in a town of 1500 people.

It can happen anywhere. As a parent that kind of stuff scares the hell out of me.

Well there are two kinds of child abductions.
Sometimes it is for horrible purposes, but many abductions ,though illegal, are just by one divorced parent unhappy with the judge's decision to leave the child entirely (or mostly) to the other one.
There was one wildly publicized case in France a few months ago, where an all-out alert was started, as if the child was in mortal danger. As soon as I heard of the circumstances (not a child going someplace alone and never reaching it, having been probably lured by some solitary maniac on the way, but several people attacking the father, and snatching the child in a car where a woman was waiting) I was sure that the mother was involved and the child was safe. And, of course, that is what transpired in the following days. That a decision of justice was being unlawfully broken (and with violence to an adult) was true, but, well, the child was not in danger.
So was that the case in your town, SHG?

I know what you mean Voralfred, but unfortunatly this was not the case here, it was some random guy trying to get this girl to his car by offering her candy. Luckly she knew what to do and ran away, what's really weird and kind of freaky is that just that morning my older daughter happen to see the story of the little girl in Flordia I was watching on the Today Show. She said the little girl was cute and I proceded to tell her what happened to her and remind Shelby what to do in case someone tried to take her, it was only later in the day that I found out what happened here the night before.

How strange to have that talk with her and than find this out, so I proceded to talk with my 9 year old this morning about it, and after finding out that the girl in Flordia was walking with her brother and sister and was still taken, I talked with my 13 year old son about watching out for his sisters and what he should do in that instance. My two older kids go to school early on Wed and then my 9 yr old walks by her self later, I don't think that will be happening for quite a while, she will be driven on those days I think. It almost makes me not want to let my kids out of my sight ever.

Then indeed, that was scary.
And not just to kids.
My 23 years old daughter who is studying in a city in southern France just told us how one of her friend was agressed a few weeks ago when walking home late at night. She got lucky, a neighbor noticed something and called the police who arrived promptly. But that was a narrow escape. We are not very happy about our daughter being there. She says she always gets home earlier, when there are still people i nthe streets, but still...
Fortunately, it is just for one year, she'll leave this rather dangerous city in May.

I have every confidance she'll be fine, but no matter how often someone tells you that you'll worry anyway, hopefully the year will go quickly and she'll be home before you know it, safe and sound. You never know how much a person can worry untill you have kids, crazy!

So, I overslept. I decided to just stay home instead of trying to get to the station in time to catch the last train to DC.
I am still trying to learn that. It's such a hard lesson...

Today I learned that you cannot ship potatoes to Mexico, or dirty shoes. And you can't ship Pokemon cards to certain cities.

Yeah, we have a bank vice president that lost about 3.3 million dollers from the national bank here in town, he was "fixing" a friend's account, lots of so called high end names from town are now being dragged through the mud. Nice huh?!!

Less than an hour ago, I learned that it is already 2010 for me, for Kvetch, for EPS and for a couple of others (and it has been 2010 already for some time already for the Aussies and Kiwis). The US-Canadian folks have to wait a few more hours

Though not all today ...
I've learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is stalk them and hope they panic and give in...
I've learned that one good turn gets most of the blankets.
I've learned that no matter how much I care, some people are just jackasses.
I've learned that it takes years to build up trust, and it only takes suspicion, not proof, to destroy it.
I've learned that whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed.
I've learned that you shouldn't compare yourself to others - they are more screwed up than you think.
I've learned that depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.
I've learned that it is not what you wear; it is how you take it off.
I've learned that you can keep vomiting long after you think you're finished.
I've learned to not sweat the petty things, and not pet the sweaty things.
I've learned that ex's are like fungus, and keep coming back.
I've learned that age is a very high price to pay for maturity.
I've learned that I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy it.
I've learned that we are responsible for what we do, unless we are celebrities.
I've learned that artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.
I've learned that 99% of the time when something isn't working in your house, one of your kids did it.
I've learned that there is a fine line between genius and insanity.
I've learned that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon and all the less important ones just never go away. And the real pains in the ass are permanent.

For some reason this one made me laugh the hardest:
I've learned that you can keep vomiting long after you think you're finished.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you,
