It's in the Reading Room, Ean143.

Yay! I started this thread, it seems so long ago now, and I finally answered a quote!

All right...give me a bit to look up an appropriate quote...it won't be long...

All right...here it is:

Name the book, speaker, and the one being spoken to...
"There's no one living who is not but a lodger upon the land. We are born, we strive, and we pass. You can only tend and pass on the land."
Good Luck! :)

Is it Royalt to Alucius in Legacies? (or am I just going up in flames, as my last two posts seem to portend?) :hot:

Re: Cold quote list

Post by Ean143 »

Since I'm still waiting out my 5 days, I went back looking for cold quotes and found on page 12 :
EJSarao wrote: I am going to post them here for their original posters to confirm that yes, indeed, they were never answered correctly, and once that has been done then the rest of us hungry quoters can be let loose upon them.
Oldblevins wrote:I had the feeling that...had oiled his way to his present position, oozing charm from every pore as he made his way across every type of floor. He was the kind I disliked almost on sight.

So, if oldblevins would please reply as to if they are still cold, then we can get going on them.
Well since he oldblevins never confirmed this, I went back and found on page 2-
oldblevins wrote: I had the feeling that...had oiled his way to his present position, oozing charm from every pore as he made his way across every type of floor. He was the kind I disliked almost on sight.

Here you need to identify, not only the source, but the source that the author is quoting in turn.
and then right below that ToryBear answered the 2nd part-- the source that the author is quoting
torybear wrote:The reference is to Henry Higgins singing in My Fair Lady about his former student trying to figure out where Eliza Dolittle is from. His conclusion. HUNGARIAN!!!
But I couldn't find that anyone identified the book and speaker and Oldblevins never chimed in but I'm going to answer it anyway since I found it while rereading the Recluce series :)
It is Lerris thinking to himself and the person who he is referring to is Leithrrse on page 281 of the paperback version of Death of Chaos.
So that's one cold quote unfrozen :D

I don't think I get a Sherlock though  cause Oldblevins just jumped in and posted without getting a quote right first. But it was fun anyway just to find it

Alright, name the speaker, book, and (for fun) the action done immediately following the quote.

"You all understand. Remember what we did. More important, remember why. Time will make it easy to forget. I'll be back, one way or another, but it may be a long cold trip. It's all in your hands, and you have a big job. The biggest ever tackled"... "We know it can be done. I did what I could, but the biggest part is up to you and I know you're up to it. You can do it. You just have to forget the past and get on with it."

Happy hunting.

After he said it, Gerswin saluted Lerwin (last page of Dawn for a Distant Earth).

Next one:
What I am certain about is that we only have each moment once, and that nothing can bring back a moment once it has passed.
Give the speaker, the listener(s), the book's title, and where in the book the quote is located.

What I am certain about is that we only have each moment once, and that nothing can bring back a moment once it has passed.
I know I can't answer this for a few more days....but....it sounds like something from Timegod (and I can't find a copy so that I can read it and find out)

Here's a hint: The quote is located near the end of a chapter. I didn't think this would be too hard. If it stumps everyone, I'll post more hints later.

All right, here's an expanded quote:
In some ways, though, there's little we can do now. There's no certainty of anything, at present. One of the few things I am sure of, from what I've seen, is that the greatest evils come when someone willfully creates misery and pain and forces other people to do evil in order to survive and avoid pain. What I am certain about is that we only have each moment once, and that nothing can bring back a moment once it has passed.

Well I just discovered the first quote last night and then got here this morning to find you had expanded it :)
This is Alucius talking to Wendra in the last chapter of Darknesses

okay, here is one that I like:
Principles can be improved....but they should never be changed or discarded for short-term expediency. No matter what the price, we must do what is right....
As usual, give the speaker, listener(s), and book. good luck!

Is it Nathaniel talking to Sylvia in Ecolitan Prime? If not then how 'bout a hint since no one's even guessing?

no, but it is a sci-fi novel. Here is some more context for the quote:
.....the key to the universe, the key to survival is trust. Trust is acting in good faith when you have no reason so to act.
Principles can be improved....but they should never be changed or discarded for short-term expediency. No matter what the price, we must do what is right....
The second key is mutual respect, within a society, and without.
Does this help?
