HUMOUR (Linguistic): War On Said - say what?

Post by felonius »

Lo! Quill and Fountainers! War has been declared on the word said!

I'll kick it off:

whispered
declared
intoned
grunted
retorted
sang
growled
chirped
muttered
replied
screamed
fussed
squeaked
murmured

Sorry if I was confusing there, Cinders - I've had WAY too much coffee tonight (it's 2 in the morning here).

I didn't mean to steal your words, and I'm sure you have tons more. :)

I tend to skip any and all describing words when using dialogue. I let the text speak for itself, without the need for any words. It works pretty well, but works even better if you use the punctuation and capatilization to is' greatest effect. All caps is a woderful way of shouting, while, a short clipped phrase with a shh at the beginning is a nice way of showing that the conversation is whispered.

I'll think of ways of using all the features that you describe with one work in the conversation itself.

Past tense.

Today, I will broadcast my victory of the empire of evil to all who will listen!

Yesterday, I broadcasted my premature analysis of my victory. Thus, today I am in an underground cell, confined as a political prisoner of the current regime, in a cell next to a smelly unshaven lout who keeps threatening to hurl his fleas at me.

Sigh.

Where are my minions, come to save me?

no. it is broad cast either way. you could not say 'yesterday I casted that lout into the dungeon'.

broad cast comes from the similarity to the seed sowing methos known as broad casting - simply throwing the seeds onto the soil.

The Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary disagrees with you.

Heh heh.

I checked because I was uncertain.

It sounds good to me either way...but I would want to be correct, even if no one else knew or cared. :P

From Dictionary.com -

broad•cast (brôd k st )
v. broad•cast, or broad•cast•ed broad•cast•ing, broad•casts
v. tr.
1. To transmit (a radio or television program) for public or general use.
2. To send out or communicate, especially by radio or television: The agency broadcast an urgent appeal for medical supplies.
3. To make known over a wide area: broadcast rumors. See Synonyms at announce.
4. To sow (seed) over a wide area, especially by hand.

On this side of the pond were mangle the English language and then put it into a dictionary and say it is right.

I'm with Kvetch - I always use "broadcast" rather than "broadcasted" for both past and present tenses.

Does that mean the Un-Patriot Act cops are gonna haul me in for interrogation? :?

Cop # 1: "Definitely a terrorist. Uses the Queen's English instead of ours."

Cop # 2: "Even uses "rather than" instead of "instead of" - must be a CBS Liberal, too."
