OK - I've finally pounced on my token.

Bit of a weak effort I know - BUT my creative juices have been squeezed a bit hard lately, and are rather thin.

Well, now that I'm stuck home recuperating for at least another 5-7 weeks, I'm anticipating being able to participate in a Vollyball 2009 match ... if you guys kick one off.

Sometime in the next few days, ability to sit permitting, I'll go back and reread what I've missed for 2008.

Clong ... you still up for it, old boy ?

We'd need at least 4 capable participants to make it worth the effort.

I've dusted off the ol quill and ink fountain, and made a few practice swishes.

Count me in...But I agree, we need at least 4 participants.

I have a friend of mine who's a pretty sharp, albeit slightly demented, cookie. If I nudge him, and pour a libation of absinthe, he might uncoil from his lair and launch a few literary strafing runs. That's probably three.

We'd need at least one or two more word hacks to reach creative critical mass.

Meanwhile, I owe you some catch-up reading and belated kudos on the stuff I've missed ... will try to get to that first thing tomorrow morning. Something to look forward to.

Clong: Hey, if he think's got the cheese for it, who are we to say him 'eeep' ? ;)

TGS: Squeak, are you related to our old buddy, Thanatos ?

Let the pre-battle hazing begin. Heh.

I'll begin putting together the 2009 threads within the next day or two, as time permits. I'll also take a look to see if the rules need updating.

Ok, I've created both threads for the 2009 match.

Let's continue the 2009-related conversation in the Volleyball 2009 - Rules & Commentary thread.

As for 2008 ... I'm reading my way through the gameplay now. :)

Belated comments on 2008:

ECM: Heh ... pretty good opening.

Cho: Loved the 8-Ball post ... but too short ! You could have gotten a lot more mileage out of that.

Voralfred: Minor goof on Feb 21 - Aaron was initially described as being blonde, not glabrous. ;)

/me continues reading ...

A question of english vocabulary: does "glabrous" imply that he was also bald?
In French, "glabre" woud mean clean-shaven (no beard or mustache) and no (or little) hair on chest, arms, legs, etc. but not necessarily no hair on the scalp, unless one explicitely insists "crâne glabre" (glabrous skull).
So what I meant by "glabrous body" was that he had no (or very little) body hair, but did not at all imply (in my mind) that he was bald.
But maybe this is the french meaning of "glabre" while "glabrous" in english implies no hair at all, not even scalp hair?

Glabrous, if I recall, is an adjective that most commonly indicates baldness. Easy enough for the non-hirsute to google confirmation. ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glabrous

Well, if you look at the painting on the top right, you see a (presumably) glabrous Venus represented without armpit hair, and even without pubic hair, (and of course no hair on arms, legs, thighs, etc.) but with a very long and beautiful (scalp) hair that she is in the process of tying up. This would correspond to my understanding of "glabre" in french: no hair except on the scalp (but there it can be quite long and thick). The french language distinguishes "cheveux" (hair on the sclap) from "poils" (hair everywhere else): "chauve"= bald = no "cheveux", "glabre"= no "poils" but is compatible with even a lot of "cheveux". Strictly speaking that would mean no pubic hair, but I was not meaning that either about poor Aaron, just that his skin was smooth and hairless on chest, arms, thighs and legs (some people even have hair on the back and the shoulders; typically these extremely "non-glabrous", "body-hairy" people tend to be bald or well in the way of becoming bald, from my observations on the beaches in France).

Gosh, and here I thought long untamed feminine underarm hair was all the rage in France ... sort of the diametrical opposite of the "full brazilian" look.

I said "glabre" meant in french, in particular "no arm-pit hair"
I never said Frenchmen prefer "glabre" women!

Battle Hym of the Hirsute

Mine eyes have seen the glory of her hair, unbound, unshorn;
she is traipsing down the aisles where the racks of Nair are stored
she hath piled all the razors and their advertising torn
Her truth is marching on.

Glabre ! Glabre ! Condemnantion !
Glabre ! Glabre ! Condemnantion !
Glabre ! Glabre ! Condemnantion !
Her hair, unbound, unshorn !

{I'll stop here} :P

Here is a woman according to my heart!

(I recognized the tune as "John Brown's Body"... but the lyrics did not match. Took me some time to find the original lyrics....)
