ho hum - not the most inspired, but it is something.

The first paragraph is meant to come from the part in the Hobbit where JRRT talks about the build up of the forces that attacked the mountain in the Battle of Five Armies - unfortunately, I couldn't look up the exact phrasing.

And clong - I reread your last one, and it was even more impressive than I'd thought it was - you really get his style off perfectly.

Anyone up for a reply to my post?

And Ghostie, you still need to catch up on scoring - and the Volleyball awards 2005

I could give it a go, but it seems kind of silly for it to just be the Kvetch and clong show . . . anyone else?

Since I have something planned (I've been reading a translation of Beowulf, and want to take a shot at the style), I'd appreciate it if *someone* would take a shot. Preferably not clong, of course - for the reason he gives

It’s not silly it is pathetic that no one else (myself included) is participating.

With the threat of losing my robe and gavel, I was compelled into scoring the posts. Here are the scores:

clong,
. . . the same ambidextrous barista . . . SSVRRRRHQ (Secret Society for the Violent and Revolutionary Restoration of Righties’ Rights Headquarters) . . . the infernal Sinestrator . . .

Xyrael,
. . . slipping into the throng . . . the doorkeeper who had an incredibly large nose. In fact, it was so large that the society had been forced to install a new window on the door so that he could see out at all

clong
. . . this does create complications . . . to investigate interesting smelling items

felonius
. . . lain emitting rancid stench . . . plush furnishings of almost regal elegance . . .. . . various parchments covered with a spidery, other-worldly cursive

clong
. . . Am I sure he’s not aiming my mind to derange? . . . hobbledehoy . . . This is just too bizarre! . . . render him hors de combat! . . . then he was gone with a tip of his hat. . .

felonius
. . . maybe: rat-a-tat-tat! , , , Good Lord! she thought. Cuneiform! . . . visceral record chronicling the carnal escapades of . . . his favourite consorts had been named Bidette . . . scrawled her translation on a scrap piece of parchment:

Kvetch,
. . . a Kilgore VLA .36 . . . depleted unobtanium slugs . . . the secret of the tanning known only by shamans of an obsure amazonian tribe . . . reduce his cat to pulp . . .

clong
. . . gain the dispassionate serenity of a Master of Scaddas . . . stubborn Sati of Scaddas . . . a vision of an avalanche of enveloping fog . . . lay denied and twisted behind the ugly visions . . .

felonius
No, too obvious . . . her magnificent cheekbones . . . hug it to my chest for consolation

Kvetch,
. . . concussed myself on a low-hanging beam . . . nor, indeed, are rats . . . the corners soaked with vitamins . . . the colour of a television tuned to a dead channel . . .

clong,
. . . Who like a wise and hardy spy essayed . . . Do swarm in glory--from the far sewers . . . Like valour's minions carving our passage . . . As doves by eagles, or hares by lions . . .

felonius,
. . . subtle greenish tinges of post-mortem decomposition . . . practiced arch and tail undulating breakdancer-worm-fashion . . . Dog lit a Marlboro, hacked twice, then snuffily exhaled smoke through flanged nostrils . . .

Kvetch,
Photo Montage

clong,
. . . assaulted by a degenerate pack of animals . . . attempted to gnaw on his limbs . . . living together as a family unit in sin against all precepts of God and Nature . . . had been reading my recent book . . . in as painful a manner as possible . . . allowed to marry and adopt human children . . . Lefty Kvetch . . .

clong,
. . . defeating the legions of the District Attorney . . . had become great beyond count, so that Florida could not contain it . . . The conservative commentators were destroyed, save some few that fled and hid themselves in the editorial offices of small rural town newspapers; and the uncounted legions of conservative bloggers perished like straw in a great fire, or were swept like shriveled leaves before a burning wind . . . but his arguments' legs were cut out from under him and they were hurled back in his face . . .   :worship:

Kvetch,
. . . and the small town newspapers became again dark and dangerous places . . . conservatives again insinuated their voices onto the airwaves . . . eccentric maiden planetoid, painted soylent green. . . The best rooms were all on the lefthand side . . .

clong,
. . . And fell tollbaby’s unrelenting hate . . . Of his gerbil sidekick, Ghost of Landfill . . . The Cthulhu realm, which all do-gooders shun . . . From whence the race of Kiwi fathers come

Correction ... 2006 :P

p.s. I'm so far behind on certain things it's scary ... but VB 2006 ranks very high on my list of things to get caught up on. I can't wait to read everything posted thus far, and rejoin the fun.

Gee, it's too bad volleyball posts only count when they're posted in the VB thread ... otherwise I'd probably be in 3rd place by now. ;)

I did a last post to end Volleyball 2006, in the style of those soundbites that David Eddings puts at the end of his books.

I want to continue on and do Volleyball 2007 (my prose might not be of the highest quality, but it is fun for me), but if only clong and I are doing it, it seems a little bit of a waste of time for us. Do you want to continue clong? do other people read it? and will other people try and join in this time?

I know people seem to be of the opinion that you need to have some idea of what has happened 'before', and while I do like some nod at continuity, there is no need to actually have it - I'd prefer to have other writers writing stuff thatt is internally consistent, rather than clong and I bandying our semi-coherent posts back and first.

Any ideas for making take up better?

And Ghost - you are two years worth of Volleyball awards behind now!

Then VB2007 there shall be - but I'll be coming after the rest of you with big sticks if you don't post.
