Sargasso of Space /Solar Queen /1
This is the first book in the Solar Queen series.
This is a book that I first read numerous years ago, when I first started reading adultish level works. It also is a short novel (as seemingly all novels were during the 1960's), but action packed.
This is the classic "Space Western". It has gun battles, outlaws, a evil head of said outlaws, authorities too far away to help, numerous priceless artifacts littered throughout the world, and a strange ability to keep a ship magnetically attached to the planets surface.
Depending on the part of the book, they rely of breaking numerous laws of physics and/or genrally understood principles of underground climate change (it is not going to go from confortable to below freezing in under an hour).
Dave Thorton is a wonderful lead character, a new assisstant cargoman (they give him a better title, but I can't remember it right now), onboard of the free trader ship "The Solar Queen" (hence, the series name).
This is the first adventure of many, and a nice read, one that I found utterly engrossing for the length of the book. If you are not into sci-fi/action, then if may not be the book for you, but otherwise, you can read it as part of an omnibus entitled "The Soalr Queen", which will hopefully be in you local library.
