Rankings (post count) have been added

Post by kiltanon »

Right now the only ranking attained is that of "Assistant Scribe"

Submissions are invited on what ranking schema should be used.

I came up with one ½ baked concept - but I am interested in what might tickle the fancy of others.

After we have seen a couple of suggestions - I will post my list. Comments will be welcome.

We have our first scribe!!!

Post by kiltanon »

and the prize goes to - BRAD!! [Like there was ever any doubt who it would be.]

Brad has also pointed out that this thread cannot right now be commented on - I will now correct this - So forgive that this thread may seem a little OT in its new board - but it has to be done for everybody to be able to suggest Ranking Titles...

Actually, the more I think about it, the more it seems ill advised to simply reward post whorage. Some of us are naturally talkative enough without needing additional encouragement :P

It might be more productive (and helpful to the site) to switch the progression from just post count alone to the number of database entries contributed ... or perhaps a mix of both.

As for some titles to consider ...

Bookworm
Apprentice Scribe
Scribe
Literature Addict
Devoted Scholar
Master Scholar
Library Guru

You might also want to add a VIP title for people who've exceeded a certain minimum number of actual purchases through your B&N linkage - after all, you're gonna need to generate funds to keep pace as your bandwidth needs grow ... so why not tap on your users ?

Just thinking out loud

speaking of adding books to the db, i think i'm going to take a sabbatical till you get the user update enabled.

it seems kind of pointless to be suggesting books when you only list 2 works by c.j. cherryh.

i could easily add over 20 titles (in my personal collection) for her alone.

I agree with B.M. - we definitely need a way to make entries into the database.

a serious suggestion:
perhaps you should have a ranking system for number of posts and in addition there should be a series of titles for those making more 'constructive' contributions to the board (ie - additions to the db, book/movie reviews)

probably won't help me much as brad is likely to qualify for both designations....damn him.

Aww, cheer up BKM - you'll graduate to the exalted status of "Scribe" when you hit 50 posts.

I'm sure you could do that in a single sitting, if you put your mind to it

another suggestion:
while all of the posters here might be considered 'authors' in the sense that we are all writing i really don't think that this is the proper forum for this subject.

kilty, perhaps you could move this topic to 'site feedback' and delete my post?

BKM, I can - however this will move it from the front page. I had to put this post into one of the "news" based fora to get it onto the front page - I wanted people to be able to comment.

I did post it's OT status here /*honest!!*/

I do like Brad's suggestions - are there any more?

I personally like the idea of recognising "special" contribution. People supporting the board through purchases - [Thanks Brad] and people contributing data - [Thanks Brad, Bob, Gazoooo, Kilt ;) & others]

I welcome suggestions for special titles...

I will most likely add some form of direct recognition - I think there is a "special rankings" Mod which will suit - I like the idea of having a large group of rankings based on post count - Everybody will always be able to see the next level to attain - they will just need to look at Brad...

If that is too difficult then there will be recognition in the regular rankings. But we shall see what we shall see.

One small point - the rankings are meant to be a bit of fun - If anybody feels offended by them - I shall assign the rank of "critic" :P

.........and Brad gets yet another shot...............I hope he's enjoying his date, otherwise we all know he'd be here defending his honour.

.......oh yet another shot.

On second thought, with him not here, this is a great time to get all our shots in.

Here is the original list I threw together -
The 1st 3 are the "special rankings"

I do like Brads Suggestions - show I will do a bit of chopping & changing - The clip levels will remain the same - just some different titles will be thrown in.

Wordsmith -
Critic -
Apprentice Scribe

Assistant Apprentice Wordsmith

So - these are the New and hopefully improved rankings

* Site Admin
* Wordsmith
* Critic
* Editer
Bookworm
Apprentice Scribe
Scribe
Master Scribe
Literature Addict
Assistant Scholar
Scholar
Devoted Scholar
Master Scholar

Brad - whilest I would LOVE to do as you suggest - I am unable to track indiviual purchasers - I can see individual sales - but they are not linked to a particular forum user :(

However - I can And will recognise those who give up data - I am looking for a "custom rating" Mod - this will enable someone to be a post whore as well as receive special recognition...

BKM: Ah, yer just jealous cuz the new rankings demoted you back to apprentice :p

KILT: No worries (re: tracking purchases) - I was just brainstorming systems that might help encourage some extra business for you. It doesnt really affect my buying habits one way or the other.

BTW, my order arrived, and there was no shipping charge - do we get free shipping when buying through your site ? (My wife's company has the same incentive program, BTW, so this is not uncommon)

you're missing most (almost the totality) of my epic struggle to gain the 'critic' title.

go here to see my mighty struggle in all of it's splendor and sleep deprived glory.

BKM: That link doesnt work for me, and the fora seems to be behaving a bit flaky today, due to the server migration that was hinted at.

So, how did you managed to jack your post count to 380+ in a single day ?

Now THAT is what I call a serious orgy of post count prostitution. Even the mightly vanessa st. james only managed to screw something like 200 guys in a single session, and she's a trained pro !

[EDIT]
As it is, we may never know ...

(snip from Kilt)
I messed up the transfer!

My /*only*/ defense is that it was around 1am I finally got it figured out.

I am going to see what I can do to at least get MOST of the posts moved through - [I don't know about the LOOOONNNGGG decicated thread by BKM :( ]

Brad:
The link worked fine for me, it was circular, but within your counts are lower as our BKM's. It's also to the old server.

Must see what's going on over there.

post counts

Post by KiltanneN »

eehhhemmmm

yes well,

BKM had done this massive post with himself on the old board after I cut things over I had to reward him in some small way - I thought I would give him 24hrs @ an exalted posting rank... :D

I migrated most of the "lost" posts over but I could n't face this - It was some 30 odd posts in a row - A mammoth effort on his part. The funniest thing is that he was shouting - in an empty room!!

He was also the stellar soul who figured out that the board had been moved - alerted everybody and sent me the panic button message that enabled me to recover everybodies lost posts...

And if anybody wonders how I did it - take a look at "kilt"'s profile and try and find any posts buy him...
