Hint 1 - expanding the quote:
"That," murmured XXX, "is why enlisted men were invented."
They smiled at each other in pleased understanding.

Who informs us of this? Colonel Gibbs, ImpSec
In what book? Komarr
What task is wanted?
To paraphrase Miles : to take "a reliable list of Waste Heat's equipment and supply purchases" to "subtract from it the current physical inventory of what's out there at their experiment station" in order to determine "the remainder" which "ought to include everything they took with them" which is extremely important to find out. A "brute force approach" and therefore the very task for which enlisted men were invented.

“He is telling the tale of AAA and the BBB CCCs,” XXX whispered to YYY. “It is a favorite.”
“Can you translate it?” YYY whispered back.
“Alas, no.”
“Too difficult?”
XXX’s DDD eyes danced, and he blushed. “Too EEE.”
Book ?
XXX ?
YYY?

Any unambiguous designations of XXX and YYY are OK, you don’t have to give the exact form in the text.
AAA is some name, BBB a numeral, CCCs a noun (plural) and DDD a color, you don’t have to give any of those (and DDD, EEE only for the bonus).

Bonus #1 (answer both questions for just 1/2 point)
Who is “He” ? (again any unambiguous designation will do, no need for the exact name)
Whom is “He” telling the tale to?

Bonus #2 (answer both questions for just 1/2 point)
What color is DDD ?
What adjective is EEE ?

Hints:

YYY speaks a language rather close to the one used by the story-teller, but just different enough that he cannot understand, which makes him frustrated.
XXX could easily translate. He just does not want to, because it is too EEE.
and YYY did not expect that to stop XXX from translating
Part of XXX's name is a nickname. And YYY also did not expect the real reason XXX was given this nickname.
A few lines after the quote there is the line
YYY eased back on the bench, swallowed some more pine needles, and reflected on the nature of words. And presuppositions.
Bonus #3
YYY did not actually swallow pine needles. What did he really swallow ?

An electromagnetic net in the cellular level passively gathers energy from the environment. Holovid carrier waves and the like. And every month or so, if it seems to be running down, you can give it a boost by placing it in your microwave for a few minutes on the lowest setting. XXX cannot be responsible, however, for the results if the owner accidently sets it on high.
What is being spoken of?
Who is XXX?

Bonuses:
1. Who is the larger entity that owns XXX?
2. What two other tales mention that entity?

JKCade has answered the main question. He gets the next quote and one point regardless of any bonuses.
In addition he got one bonus, so 1 and 1/2 points total (on a possible total of two).
You should update the sherlocks, mentioning if you want that one bonus is still pending. Whoever answers the second bonus won't get the right to quote, just 1/2 point.
This can be regularized on the sherlock thread at any time, if and when the second bonus is answered. Unanswered bonuses are valid without any time limit.

"It will," XXX assured him. "Doubly so, if YYY ends up (doing something) to a HHH." If he doesn't get jailed first on some trumped-up treason charge, that is.

Book?

YYY?
What would YYY end "doing something" to?
What are/is HHH?

I don’t know why they encourage maidens to be squeamish; there’s no place in women’s work for someone afraid to get her hands dirty.

Adding context around the quote:

XXX raised his eyebrows, as if amused, or at least bemused, by her military stride.
And a follow-on hint: This is not Vorkosigan Saga, nor is it Five Gods/Chalion, nor one of the short stories.

Who says this?
What book?
What is the job that's wanted?

Down to Sharing Knife (initial tetralogy + Knife Children) or Spirit Ring

If Sharing Knife, Lakewalkers maiden are definitely not encouraged to be squeamish.
So a farmer woman too old for something, but still with a military stride ?????
I can't imagine Fawn's mother with a military stride, and I have trouble thinking of any other mature farmer woman in the tetralogy. Lily's mother ? Not that old yet...

If Spirit Ring... I last read it decades ago and I can't find my copy.....
